JUNE JAEWON LEE
SKT is proud to present ‘Still Grooming’ and ‘You still want to leave?’ two paintings by June Jaewon Lee, a South Korean artist, currently completing a fine art degree in Goldsmiths.
June’s work is intuitive. Her subjects are often humans or creatures that left a mark in her life. She pays homage to them by expressing the way she sees them, not physically but emotionally. The bright ‘toxic’ colours that she uses maximise the weight of emotions her subjects bring her. Through using these colours she manages to paint a true representation of her world made with feelings and sensitivity.
Her paintings filled with colour and nostalgic metaphors explore the questions: “can humans control their emotions? Or do emotions control humans?”
Growing up June was surrounded by nature and flowers since her parents were flower farmers. She admits that for a long time she felt sick of flowers, however, now she is learning to love her surroundings and admits that the environment she grew up in has become the foundation of her artistic style. The experience of growing up in a remote location far away from the loud city life has also made her practice thoughtful and contemplative and allowed her to search for purest and simplest ways of expressing feelings through visual mark-making.
SKT’s values completely align with those of June Jaewon Lee. We have teamed up with WhereFrom UK to plant a tree for every artist that joins our restArt the planet exhibition. To see ‘Still Grooming’ and ‘You still want to leave?’ by June Jaewon Lee you can visit the exhibition on our website.
