June #Edu resources - part 3??

June #Edu resources - part 3??

Happy Saturday, folks, and welcome to my third edition of June! And wow, this has been a super busy week with a lot of miles driven to boot. I haven't had that much time for the news while doing lots of driving, so apologies if I missed anything important. Courtesy of a very enthusiastic Ferdi waking up this morning, it's 2.45am as I start pulling all this news together.

I usually like to share a brief summary of my week, so here is a quick highlight from the last few days of craziness alongside my NetSupport activities, it's been a really busy one for me so it's meant a bit less reading and spotting of articles.

I did manage to catch up with the leadership team at Hampton Academies Trust for another strategic planning meeting, lots of friendly faces to talk all things #Ai in Edu at the Bromcom annual conference at the Shard in London, including a lot overdue catchup with James Browning , alongside a visit to London again yesterday for some secret filming with the fab team at Bett Global in their studio, (watch this space) meeting up with the fab Mary Lloyd , Olivia Pilling , Abhishek Munjal and Bjorn Sirum . We also had a Exec council meeting for the British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) association, and separately some planning for a new online event in the Autumn. I also attended a regional Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce event to talk about #Skills in our region, the role of technology and economic opportunities and, as usual, plenty more.

I've also been asked twice this week by lovely folks commenting on my newsletter if I have help curating it. The simple answer is no, whenever i see a good article I "send link" via email to a personal email account, and at the end of the week I have typically 75+ articles to review, from that, 40 or so make it into the newsletter once I start typing. Really very basic; perhaps I should be using #Ai instead of Al :)

Anyway, that will do for my musings; plenty of more interesting things to read further down.

Anyway, you are here for the news, so let's dip our toes into this week's fountain of knowledge. ??

#Edu

?? A great article to kick things off from Tom Rees in Schools Week "Four policies for a long-term transformation of the SEND system" It will take time, money and leadership, but we need a vision and a plan to ensure specialist provision is equal to the scale of need now and in the future. A very pragmatic read you can find here.

?? Alex Quigley shared a new article, "Fixing Learning with Formative Assessment" highlighting "Formative assessment approaches are those moment-by-moment responses to the tricky issues and barriers that beset even the best laid lesson plans." You can read it here.

?? A share for my UK readers, from the fab Tony Parkin of an article from Schools Week titled "Ofsted must embrace 'far-reaching reform', say leaders" noting that watchdog has been warned its single-phrase judgments cause “sky-high stress and anxiety”, exacerbate the recruitment and retention crisis and pose an ongoing “risk to life”. Have a read here.

?? A nice link to the above was a podcast this week from Headteacher Update "Podcast: Protecting headteacher wellbeing during Ofsted inspection" which you can listen to here.

?? The fab team at Leading Your International School have shared the first draft of their "Leader Profile" for International schools. They are keen to seek your insights and feedback, so take a look here and see what you think or can add.

As an aside, and a great one, the Leading Your International School folks also have a new book out too, "Starting Your International School: A Handbook for Sustainable Start-up Success: 1 (Leading Your International School)" by André Double 安德烈 杜布勒 , Chris Nash and Grainne O'Reilly which you can find here.

?? Another excellent article this week from Brian Host "Rekindling your passion". As Brian introduces "Educators often face challenges that can dampen their initial passion for teaching. Reignite your teaching passion by remembering what drew you to education, challenge your routines, celebrate small wins, connect with peers, and seek support. Even small shifts in perspective can make a big difference, creating a fulfilling experience for you and your students." Have a read here folks.

?? Damian Bacchoo shared a great article titled "Computer Says No", explaining, "Inspired by Carol Beer (aka David Williams), this week I explore why the school timetable is so often the graveyard of great ideas". Have a read here.

?? I'm sure that Phillip Alcock can help me with this question, alongside many others, as I have seen #PBL explained as "Project Based Learning" but also referenced as "Problem based Learning", both are correct but one (project) requires students to produce an artefact to demonstrate their mastery of content, the latter (problem), to present a solution to a clearly defined authentic problem. I've intentionally used more formalised descriptors, so my question is, can these be interchangeable in approach, or are both replaced with #CBL, Challenge based Learning? I know I normally share resources and answers, so less common for a question, but it intrigues me how these definitions are used, rightly or wrongly, in sessions in an almost interchangeable way. #AlwaysLearning

?? An interesting read shared by Andy Homden titled "The right kind of sustainable" discussing building or modifying a school for sustainability by Harry Hoodless . Have a read of the article here.

"I’d urge those looking at developments not to leap at the application of renewable technologies as the saviour, but determine your position on environmentalism first, and get to the root of what might work for you. The dialogue might be a great way to bring the school community together, raise awareness and have something to measure against."

?? A great freebie from the lovely Dr Pooky Knightsmith , sharing "For any fellow journalers out there, here's a set of prompts to help you seek the delight in every day". read here article "JOURNAL: Cherishing Daily Delights" from here.

?? Are you ready for ISTE Live in Denver? Only a couple of weeks to go, and I was able to join a pre-show conversation with event coordinators Camilla Gagliolo and Brandon Petersen as well as fellow event speaker Abid Patel for a roundtable hosted by Maggie Layfield . We had a great discussion, and it gave a real sense of what to expect this year, key themes and some laughs too. You can watch the discussion here. Enjoy!

?? Another thought-provoking and self-reflective share from SJ White last week on "Embracing the Ick" or more specifically, Networking gives her the ick, but she loves being in a network, and loves connecting, learning and growing. It's leaving your comfort zone she's not a fan of. A great read once again that I am sure many will identify with. Have a read here.

?? So, Is the ultimate purpose of education to be helping students live successful, morally good, happy, and well-balanced lives? Hopefully you will enjoy this discussion in this recent ‘Human Flourishing’ webinar with myself, Patrick McGrath and host Mark Anderson FCCT .

?? Daniel Catarino da Silva was very excited to share his most recent work at the OECD Education and Skills on "Innovative assessment tools for social and emotional skills", co-written with Adriano Linzarini . In a nutshell he explains it as "Cooperation, self-control, curiosity, empathy or creativity are essential skills for school, work and life, but we have limited instruments to measure them objectively. We have identified and reviewed almost 60 behavioural assessment tools, such as tasks and digital games. Through them, children and adults can manifest more authentic behaviours, allowing the direct measurement of 20 different social and emotional skills. These innovative methods are reviewed according to their reliability, ecological and construct validity, and feasibility." Take a look at their interactive table here.

?? A really useful share from Abid Patel on the ever-present topic of #Cybersecurity, discussing the resources from the National Cyber Security Centre "Cyber security training for school staff". As Abid reminded readers "The RPA (Risk Protection Arrangement) requires schools to ensure that all school staff have undertaken training on Cyber Security using the content from the NCSC's website, in order to be eligible for their cyber cover offering." He noted it hasn't been updated for 3 years and needs a revisit (he even volunteered to assist). You can access the resources as they stand here.

?? One from Mark Steed , who continues to raise concerns over our current recruitment and retention crisis. You can see a copy of Mark's letter published in The Times from here (he's spot on in my humble opinion).

?? Emma Rogers had a thought for education during #LondonTechWeek. "What if we stopped trying to implement technology into classroom learning? Just kept it in the background (AI), used it for managing and tracking to make every teacher’s job easier and to provide a framework for every student to achieve their goals." You can read her post here, it's intended to challenge, and so whilst I don't align with all of it, in terms of its intent, getting us to reflect and consider, it's definitely worth a read here.

?? David Goodwin produces brilliantly signposted summaries and posters, recently, he produced a trio of one-page posters to summarise discussions and the latest guidance on adaptive teaching, covering the why, what and how. You can find them on his post here.

?? Claire Emery noted an upcoming seminar from the Confederation of School Trusts on "The trustee role in supporting CEO development" noting that "If your trust is subscribed to CST, do try to ensure a member of the trust board's CEO Performance Management Panel / Committee attends this seminar (June 18th). Providing your most senior employee with opportunities for ongoing professional development (as well as challenge and care for their wellbeing) is a critical part of the annual review process." For CST members you can find it here.

?? A great read from Tom Bolton "Is the real world of work more playful than most schools?" As Tom starts his post "Good learning focuses on the activity the students will tackle - and less on the teacher talk. Or as it's been articulated before: less teaching, more learning." Well worth a read here.

?? Yes this one does have an #Ai focus, but it also has a child focus and I reckon is one for everyone. Summarised by one of my #SuperSharers Barbara Anna Zielonka this report "The Future of Child Development in the AI Era: Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives Between AI and Child Development Experts". You can read Barbara's key takeaways from the report by everyone.AI from here. Well worth a look.

?? Barbara also shared that the World Economic Forum ’s Global Gender Gap Report 2024 focuses on various aspects of gender equality, with a significant emphasis on the implications and advancements of Artificial Intelligence (AI), commenting "the report highlights that while AI brings incredible opportunities, it also underscores the necessity for human-centric skills and continuous learning. Educators and organizations must focus on developing skills that complement AI, ensuring a balanced and inclusive approach to technological advancement." Have a read of her handy summary here.

Ferdi with the Edufuturists Wolfpack.

?? A reminder folks - Not long now (11th July in Leeds) until the annual extravaganza that is the Edufuturists Uprising, it's genuinely a fun and inspiring evening and even better still, you can get 25% off the few remaining tickets. This is the link you need for the discount, I'll be there and looking forward to meeting many good friends at the event.

?? The lovely folks at Naace - The EdTech Association and running a national "EdTech Survey of UK Schools" at the moment and they need your input, it only takes a few minutes to complete, and you could win £100, so do try and help them with their research and share your experiences. Complete their survey form here.

?? I just love this last minute bit of news i spotted almost last on my feed, shared by the brilliant Melissa McBride ?? "IOC EB proposes creation of “Olympic Esports Games” to IOC Session", how flippin brilliant would that be !?!?! The article headlines that they are "proposing the creation of “Olympic Esports Games” to the 142nd IOC Session, which will be held during the Olympic Games Paris 2024, when the IOC Members will vote on this proposal. The IOC is already in advanced discussions with a potential host, and an announcement can be expected very soon after the last formalities have been finalised." Have a read here.

?? A great podcast episode for you to dive into titled "Saying it as it is" the episode notes explain "Marking Loneliness Awareness Week talks to Caroline Keep sharing advice on making adult friendships, the impact of our host’s ( Gina Patel ) interview in the national media last year on loneliness and the role the media has". Two excellent folks to listen to, so please do from here. (Spotify)

?? Great article in the TES shared by Rebecca Boomer-Clark of Lift Schools titled "How we restructured our multi-academy trust" explaining how they restructured in light of how many multi-academy trusts face a common challenge: getting the balance right between providing consistent central services and having the flexibility to address local needs. An excellent MAT with a really strong team and a great read to boot, from here.

Cool tools that are definitely worth a look.

#Ai

?? This one remains top of my #Ai section, an excellent newsletter, "Perpelexing Tech" ??that covers the world of #Ai through a wider lens. It is written by Niamh Kingsley my daughter, a product innovation and #Ai specialist in #FinTech. Please take a look and subscribe here ? This week, alongside her regular update she shared a great "5 Wonderful Women in Ai" that is definitely worth diving into here.

?? A good read (as always) from Dr Will Van Reyk rightly highlighting that "AI ethics should be mandatory for schoolchildren" with William sharing "This is the title of a brilliant new academic article out in the journal AI Ethics which argues that the teaching of AI ethics should begin in primary school." he links to the research in the comments, but I'd recommend you read his post first, which you can find here.

?? Whenever I am looking for recent articles around #Ai in education, Chris Goodall is never far away, sharing a wealth of resources. This week he shared a simple but effective 6 page slidedeck under an article titled "AI in the Classroom - Managing the Risks", Chris explained "I have been putting together a document that categorises some of the main AI use cases in schools and highlighting the level of risk and mitigation's that staff can take when considering use." Take a peek here.

?? Ross McGill shared a new blog asking "Can Artificial Intelligence ever replace the human touch in teaching?" Well, it's a resounding no from me, but what do I know? Fortunately, Ross's article provides a much more structured agreement with me, stating, "As AI becomes more prevalent, teachers must adapt and learn to integrate these technologies effectively to ensure that students receive a balanced education." Have a read of his article here.

"AI’s role in education is growing, but human teachers remain irreplaceable due to their unique qualities and classroom insights …"

?? The fab Bonnie Nieves has been busy crafting a new free GPT resource with her "Be Awesome On Purpose" planning partner, which is a GPT based on her book, "Be Awesome On Purpose: Using Reflection as a Tool to Teach With C.A.R.E.," explaining that this is an "AI-driven planning partner encourages educators to rethink their approach to lesson planning and reflection." Sound interesting? Then head over here to give it a spin.

?? John Mikton is in the habit of including more than one handy resource in each of his shares, this week he shared two interviews worthy of a listen while we "continue to engage, use, and be in awe of the AI tools surrounding us". This first one, is on Apple Podcasts titled "Former OpenAI Engineer William Saunders on Silence, Safety, and the Right to Warn" which you can listen to here, and the second is another Apple podcast "A Conversation With Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada + An OpenAI Whistle-Blower Speaks Out" which you can listen to here. As John summarised "Both highlight the complexity of the companies creating these powerful tools and the intricate dynamics of oversight, safety, and ethics."

?? Yup, it's an #AertsAlert from the brilliant Carla Aerts this time with some pretty mainstream news from 9to5Mac titled "Report: Apple to launch iOS 18 AI features marketed as ‘Apple Intelligence’", we are all talking #Ai but now we have #AI (Apple Intelligence) as well, just to make things even more complicated. So technically, this is "Al writing about Ai and AI" confused yet? Have a read here. (and no, I'm not surprised Apple found a way to brand the letters A and I for themselves).

?? Philippa Wraithmell signposted a great read from John Jones who was "evaluating Apple's recent AI announcement with interest" with a high level "Benefits" and "Challenges" consideration, plus preparing for the future, that I thought was a really balanced assessment. Have a read here.

?? On a similar theme, Donald Clark shared his article "Sam has ditched Satya for Tim – he’s so louche that lad!" and commented "Apple Intelligence is here! Personalisation has just taken a huge leap. ... interesting swing towards performance support on steroids." Read his article here.

?? Lovely chap Phillip Alcock has been busy, albeit clearly not as busy as he could have been, as he shared that he had "just created a 5-hour AI literacy workshop for the Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy Adult Literacy Practioners in under 10 minutes using Google NotebookLM!" Clearly impressed Phillip shared that "This incredible AI-powered tool transformed my LinkedIn article on 'DIY AI Literacy' into a comprehensive workshop plan, complete with micro-projects, discussion points, and even a quiz." He shared a very handy slide deck on how he did it; well worth a look from here.

?? It was a bit of a Google Notebook overload this week, but Adrian Cotterell was also busy exploring and had some equally positive results; he steps through his experiences here.

?? Jonathan S. shared an article by Pete Dunford titled "Adventuring with AI: innovating with integrity". As Jonathan commented "How we use AI in education is key. Whether we use it or not has gone. Professional Educators will do what they do best, create meaningful and purposeful learning for their students. I love this creative thinking!". You can read the article here, and i loved the quote chosen in the article (see below).

“The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy, we can all sense a mysterious connection to each other.” – Meryl Streep

?? Jason Gulya is consistently a considered and reflective voice on the use of #Ai effectively. He shared a post last week highlighting the 4 resources he plans to use when he revisits all of his assessments in the fall. Very reassuring to see he is reflecting with Leon Furze 's Assessment Scale, Mike Kentz 's "Stop Grading Essays, Start Grading Chats" framework, Amanda Bickerstaff 's Ai and Assessment resources from AI for Education and Phillip Alcock 's great resources for #PBL. Check out his post and all the relevant links from here.

?? One from Barbara Anna Zielonka picked from The Guardian , which is a very pressing and relevant topic "How to spot a deepfake: the maker of a detection tool shares the key giveaways". It's an interesting read, alongside providing a link to a free tool you might want to play with "DeepFake-O-Meter" which you can find here. Don't think this is a tool that you can rely on though, as the article comments "I think a false image of reliability is worse than low reliability, because if you trust a system that is fundamentally not trustworthy to work, it can cause trouble in the future". Have a read of the article here.

?? Leon Furze shared an article from OpenAI which he signposted as "More important research regarding transparency, along a similar line to Anthropic’s recently published paper." You can read the article "Extracting Concepts from GPT-4" from here.

?? Lisa Durff PhD shared an article from eCampus News "Defining higher-ed policy for AI in teaching and learning" reminding us there is still a critical need for institutions of higher education to adopt a framework to guide both AI policy and practice. Have a read here.

?? I always find great resources reading articles from Dan Fitzpatrick , last week he shared a handy one titled "6 AI Tools Recommended By Teachers, That Aren’t ChatGPT" featuring Brisk Teaching , SchoolAI , Diffit for Teachers , Curipod , SkyBox Labs and Ideogram - well worth a read here.

?? A really thoughtful and considered read from Darren Coxon "Bureaucracy robs us of our humanity, making our individuality subservient to the system. It's time to move into a new phase." Definitely on to read, from here.

We must create places of teaching and learning that people ???????? to attend, not ???????? to attend. This means removing choking bureaucratic structures and allowing everyone to breathe.

?? Get your brain in gear for this one from Hamza Aoun titled "???????????????????????? ?????????????????????? ?????????????????????? ???????? ???? ???????????????????? ?????? ???????????? ????????????????????", A new AI-driven system designed to enhance (long term) educational assessments. Fortunately, there is a short video that explains the concept and is well worth a watch, from here.

?? A handy one from the always informative Fengchun Miao featuring "A taxonomy on human agency in designing and using AI" explaining "If we don't have a good understanding about what we mean about human agency in the design and uses of AI, we can't teach students about this concept - we will confuse them with our confusions." Grab it here.

?? Clara Lin Hawking highlighted a new tool to rival (or surpass) OpenAI 's #Sora, namely #Kling, Clara summarised "Kling’s entry into the text-to-video market marks a significant advancement in AI technology. Its potential to revolutionize how we create and consume visual content is immense". Read the article on Decrypt "Sora Who? Kling Is the New AI Video Generator Everyone Is Talking About" from here. "Hailing from China, the Kling AI video model is a potential game changer, blasting past mainstays like Pika or RunwayML. Here's what you need to know."

?? Great new edition of Bonnie Nieves Educate On Purpose Professional Development and Coaching newsletter "The Ai Shift in Assessment" where she explores the impact of AI on my classroom assessment practices. Have a read here.

?? Two excellent voices in Ai came together on the "Tattooed Teacher Podcast" hosted by Philip Murdoch ?? when he interviewed Darren Coxon . The discussion covered a wide range of topics related to AI in education, including the use of AI in schools, the impact of AI on students and the role of parents in AI education. Have a listen from here.

?? Tim Evans shared a great article on "The AI Prompt Loop: The concept of 'Human - AI - Human". It's a good read and as context explains that the research (see article) underscores the pivotal role of prompt engineering in optimizing AI performance. The AI Prompt Loop encompasses Goal, Language, Context, Format and Review and offers a structured approach. Have a read here.

?? Cleonel A. Bottex shared a report by the European Commission that "thoroughly elucidates very useful perspectives on our current knowledge of AI and human cognition. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in artificial intelligence, teaching children, or training adults". The report "The impact of Artificial Intelligence on learning, teaching, and education" is from 2018, but may be a handy source of reference for you too. Take a look here.

?? Always good value from Tai Paschall who as a follow up to article article last week, shared Part II of The Teacher's Role in an AI-Integrated Classroom: Training Teachers for AI Integration. Tai explained "This week's article may seem a little more procedural and practical over being philosophical. This is intentional, because I want this book; "When AI Goes to School", to be used over and over again like a "GUIDE" and not just a dust collector in your teacher library." Read the article here.

?? Phillip Alcock also shared an excellent resource for Ai tools curated by Stacy Kratochvil on her Wakelet page. It's packed with lots of great resources so do check it out here.

?? Emma Rogers provided a bit of "Ying" to the #EdTech "Yang" asking "What if we stopped trying to implement technology into classroom learning? Just kept it in the background (AI), used it for managing and tracking to make every teacher’s job easier and to provide a framework for every student to achieve their goals." - you can read her article here, it's all about balance, finding the right balance of course is the real challenge.

?? A good read from Frank Kumli "What Machines Can’t Master: Human Skills to Thrive in the Age of AI!" It's not easy as this is an ever changing landscape and the "Moores Law" of technology is seeing ever increasing change, but it's good to remind ourselves, as best we can predict, the value of those most human skills. Have a read here.

?? Just when we thought the world of #GPTs was becoming clearer and lot's of folks were creating new personalised versions, Melissa McBride ?? shared a post from Christopher Rice advising that "Microsoft is retiring its GPT Builder in 4 Weeks." They summarised "We are shifting our focus on GPTs to Commercial and Enterprise scenarios and are stopping GPT efforts in consumer Copilot." Christopher's blunt translation was: "Microsoft isn't making enough money from consumer MS365 subscriptions to pay for the cloud costs of an OpenAI-based service." Have a read of his post here.

If there is someone you think I should be following, who is sharing great content that I could help share, please tag them in a comment so I can connect with them.

#Books

?? Don't forget you can find all of the books I cover on my Amazon bookshelf, You can find my curated list here.

?? Not many new spots this week i'm afraid, but I did see this one by Dee Lanier and Ken Shelton "The Promises and Perils of AI in Education" which explores the transformative power of AI in education, along with the ethical considerations and equity challenges. You can find it here.

?? Mark Anderson FCCT shared his new "ICT Evangelist Classroom Companion" chatbot. Which Mark explained was "Built on principles of cognitive science, informed by my STAIR approach to prompt design, my Little Book of #GenAI prompts and much more" You can have a play with it here.

?? Alex Quigley shared this recommendation in his article I shared at the start of this week's newsletter, titled "The Hidden Lives of Learners" by Graham Nuttall. You can find it here.

?? Top man Dan Fitzpatrick shared "5 Books On AI In Education And Why You Should Read Them" in his latest Forbes Article, including a recommendation from me. Great list from Dan, check it out here.

?? I spotted another great recommendation from Lauren Sayer JP for "Collective Leader Efficacy" by Peter DeWitt, Ed.D. . Lauren said "I recently finished reading Peter DeWitt's insightful book, Collective Leader Efficacy, and it’s a transformative read for anyone in educational leadership." Grab a copy here, but I'd also recommend you read Lauren's excellent takeaways from the book here.

?? When I met James Browning this week, he also shared a great book recommendation, "The Atomic Human: Understanding Ourselves in the Age of AI" by Neil Lawrence, you can find it in print and audiobook here.

?? Another handy one from Leon Furze this time a different perspective with "Don’t use GenAI to grade student work", Leon highlights that AI grading is not the answer and in this article he explains his thoughts and rationale. Take a look here.

?? If you fancy an easy read on #EdTech and the evolution of Educational Technology, then you might well enjoy ?? "My Secret #Edtech Diary" based on my 30 years of experience. It's not meant to be a technical overload, but very much a narrative as if we sat down in a coffee shop and talked it through together. You can find it here.
