June Edition

June Edition

Welcome back to our monthly newsletter, Electrification Connect, which is designed for the entire community.?

A Word from Petar Igic

June felt like a very important month for the electrification sector and the continuing evolution of the ERS Hub.

Media coverage of this emerging market is growing and with it comes a raft of companies, providers and individuals keen to explore opportunities in this field, many of whom are taking their first tentative steps in our arena.?

This means our community is growing and our existing legion of experts are being joined by a new breed of engineers looking to gain different skills and new starters that will give us the critical mass to compete in the global race.

It was a train of thought that was echoed throughout Power Electronics Machines & Drives 2024, the showpiece event for the ‘great and good’ of PEMD.

This is a critically important three days for our industry as best practice is shared, new and emerging trends are explored, and technology breakthroughs are championed. Transportation Energy Systems, building manufacturing scale and extreme applications were three of the more prominent topics being discussed.

Importantly, it is also recognised as a place that successfully brings global industry and academia together, something that is critical to our journey and something we need more of.

We are constantly championing this approach through our work with the ERS Hub. The feedback we received during the three days in Nottingham focused on the way we have created a platform that offers something for everyone, whether you are an employer looking to recruit, a training provider offering courses or an individual keen to explore a possible career in electrification.

Skills

I was also delighted to see that two of our ERS Hub colleagues were invited to participate at the event’s special session – Empowering PEMD Educators: Bridging the skills gap. Richard Lane was invited to take part in a panel discussion, whilst Tony Smith gave a detailed presentation on how we are developing and delivering training to employers.?

Part of this critical discussion was the need to get companies on board and how they can work with the world of electrification to map the skills we need to commercialise new technologies.

Talking about it is one thing, engaging with business is another, which is why we were delighted to roll-out the first away pilot course for the Electrification Skills Training Programme just ten days after PEMD 2024.

Held at the DER-IC North East facility in Sunderland, a team of four Coventry University PEMD experts - Lu Wang, Soroush Faramehr, Tony Smith and Chris Atanasov - supported more than 20 employees at Advanced Electric Machines (AEM).

Funded by Innovate UK, we have brought together a diverse collaboration of organisations, industry and training providers – all with a track record in Power Electronics, Machines and Drive and delivering large-scale skills interventions – to create training bootcamps that will address the skills gap challenge.

Acting on existing feedback, the training programme is pitched at different levels of expertise, starting at fundamentals and then moving up to intermediate and through to advanced.?

Each level runs over three to four-days and will cover numerous key topics, including electronic circuits, high voltage H&S, electrical machines, the typology of MOSFETs and IGBTs, inverters, e-motor drives, dc motors and asynchronous/synchronous motors.

We are still digesting feedback, but the initial feeling is that we have a training plan that can really work for upskilling, bridging skills gaps and advancing existing staff.?

These bootcamps are co-designed with employers, the learning is flexible and, importantly, we can bring our mobile laboratories, jammed full of PEMD technology, direct to your workplace.

It’s time to tell everyone about our Electrification Skills Training Programme offer and encourage companies to be amongst the first to take advantage.

?

Best Regards,
