Announcements and Reads

It was an active week on Substack and other blog platforms with some fantastic, thought provoking articles out on meaty topics. The ones that got my attention this week were:?

• Jennifer Pahlka writing on Project vs. Product Funding. If you need to know anything about technology in government, this is much of it. But of course, check out Jen’s book for the full story!?
• John Proffitt , Chief Digital Officer at Franklin County, reflecting on AI hype in civic tech and how local governments can rethink their approach to focus on how it could be just another tool to bring change to public services?

?? There was big news last week with the IRS announcing that their Direct File program would be permanent, but of course, there has to be drama with the House GOP proposing defunding the program.?

?? New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that congestion pricing in NYC would be on pause “indefinitely” after originally having a June 30 launch date. As a former transit planner, this is truly sad news for NYC. I am hopeful that the calls to action to MTA board members and state representatives will put this key climate and public good initiative back on track.?

?? Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has several exciting roles open right now tied to digital and data modernization initiatives. They are seeking a Director of Product Modernization to lead the development of a digital modernization roadmap across the portfolio before turning to proofs of concept, and a Data Science Engineering Manager to shape internal infrastructure to support data.?

?? The State of Maryland is hiring for an early leadership role in their new Digital Service team. The Senior Director of Product and Platforms will join Marcy Katz Jacobs , and develop and drive the overall platform strategy, as well as lead the product management team.?

?? Bryanna Pardoe from CODE PA announced that they are expanding their team with 4 new roles only open for a few short days! The incredible digital service team is looking for a content strategist, product manager and two project managers. Roles close on Monday, June 10!?

?? Colorado Department of Early Childhood is hiring for several product roles to support the Universal Preschool Program which started in the 2023-24 school year to serve over 40,000 children. The team will own the application and matching system, as well as working on the product vision for the agency overall.?

?? TechCongress has launched a one-time AI Safety Fellowship focused on building and supporting internal capacity in federal agencies to advance AI safety consistent with the AI EO. Applications close June 12!?
