Dear friends,?
During the couple of days of hazardous air quality NYC experienced earlier this month, the Health Department’s?Real Time Air Quality page ?saw record web traffic.?Taking note of this,?Sami Jarrah , who until recently was CFO at the Health Department (and an FPHNYC board member), astutely commented on LinkedIn: “Investing in government can’t happen in the moment you urgently need the data or action. Access to reliable data to inform action takes time, resources, expertise, and foresight. The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has done just that.”
For more than 20 years, FPHNYC has mobilized public and private investment to bolster the Health Department’s capacity to develop programs and take actions that protect and improve the health of New Yorkers.?We may not know when the next forest fire will fill our skies with smoke, but the majority of public health issues New Yorkers face are ones we do know much about – such as diabetes and hypertension, maternal morbidity, drug misuse, and mental health. And we know too that to achieve better health outcomes and reduce health inequity, we need to expand the strategic partnerships and investments that make public health innovation possible.
Even the orange pall of smokey air hasn’t diminished my belief in the potential for a New York City where all people enjoy optimal health. It is a vision I am confident FPHNYC is better able to help realize than ever before, thanks to the dedication of our staff (including our?expanded leadership team ), the strength of our partnership with the Health Department, and the individuals and institutions that recognize the importance of investing in public health.?
Warmly,
Sara Gardner , Chief Executive Officer?

NYC REACH Advances Primary Care in NYC
Many New Yorkers regard their primary care providers as a trusted source of health information and quality care. The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene supports the primary care system in the city through NYC REACH. Launched in 2010, NYC REACH is a partnership of the Health Department’s Bureau of Equitable Healthy Systems and the Fund for Public Health NYC.?Read more on the FPHNYC blog ?about how primary care providers and their patients benefit from NYC REACH’s wide range of programs.
