The OCP at the 26th CBD of the SBSTTA in Nairobi, Kenya
From 13 to 19 May, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) held its intersessions in Nairobi, Kenya. Two agenda items focused on marine and coastal biodiversity, with the aim of advancing the implementation of the new Global Biodiversity Framework. The OCP was actively involved in encouraging an ambitious outcome and organised an event - in partnership with the IRD , the Office fran?ais de la biodiversité (OFB), the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) , The Nature Conservancy and WWF . The aim of the event was to present the various opportunities for taking greater account of marine and coastal ecosystems in national biodiversity strategies. The OCP also organised an informal meeting with members of the ocean community attending the event to discuss current negotiations.

Article - Ocean protection quality is lagging behind quantity: Applying a scientific framework to assess real marine protected area progress against the 30 by 30 target - Conservation Letters
A study reveals that only a third of the 100 largest marine protected areas (MPAs), representing 90% of the total surface area of MPAs, benefit from effective protection against high-impact activities such as industrial fishing. In the context of the 30x30 target (Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework), the American, French and Portuguese scientists behind the study are proposing that MPAs with an unknown or insufficient level of protection should no longer be taken into account, that MPAs should be extended to cover all marine ecosystems, and that the international treaty on the protection of the high seas should be ratified to include only MPAs offering a high level of protection. Article - 3D ocean assessments reveal that fisheries reach deep but marine protection remains shallow - Nature Communications
This study reveals that current global conservation targets have a 2D vision for setting protection objectives and measuring anthropogenic impacts. The analysis put forward here is in 3D, and takes into account marine ecoregions and the different depths of the ocean. The results show that there are gaps in the conservation representations of marine biodiversity at depths where light is (very) limited and in the abysses, as well as an under-representation of high levels of protection at all marine depths.
