New Zealand to Introduce Bill to Reverse Oil and Gas Exploration Ban

New Zealand’s government is pressing ahead with plans to lift a ban on offshore oil and gas exploration, citing energy security challenges from “rapidly” declining natural gas reserves. Natural gas is “critical” for the economy during periods of peak electricity demand and when generation dips from more intermittent sources such as wind, solar and hydropower, Resources Minister Shane Jones said in a statement.

The bill would end the ban, in place since 2018, on exploration outside onshore Taranaki, an energy-rich region on New Zealand's North Island and will be introduced to parliament before the end of 2024.
