Phil Hardingham looks over the pond to Canada in his latest blog, examining their pension plans and regulatory frameworks that incorporate longevity pooling.??
?We believe that pooling risk could significantly benefit savers by offering greater stability and potential returns. Canadian examples, such as the Target Benefit Plans (TBPs) and the University of British Columbia Faculty Pension Plan (UBC FPP), highlight the advantages of longevity pooling. TBPs in British Columbia cover about a fifth of members in registered pension plans, resembling DB multi-employer pension plans but with the flexibility to adjust benefits based on funding positions. Meanwhile, the UBC FPP utilizes Variable Payment Life Annuities to redistribute proceeds from deceased members to those living longer, retaining exposure to higher-return risk assets.
