Why Hearing Aids Sometimes Don’t Work (And What You Can Do About It)

Did you know that while millions of people purchase hearing aids each year, well under 30% of those individuals achieve the full potential benefit from their devices??

Despite the incredible advancements in hearing aid technology, and the relatively high cost of care, many users still experience dissatisfaction and frustration. But why is that?

As an audiologist, I frequently see patients who have spent thousands of dollars on hearing aids, only to be disappointed by the results. These individuals often tell me their hearing aids don't work as expected, leaving them feeling frustrated and disillusioned.

However, when we refit their devices and incorporate them into a comprehensive Best Practice program, the improvement is often remarkable. These patients are blown away by the difference, proving that the quality of care matters more than the hearing aids themselves.

Why Hearing Aids Sometimes Don't Work

The truth is, good quality hearing aids aren’t a stand-alone solution. In the United States, it is a sad reality that only around 30% of hearing professionals scientifically verify their fitting prescription using real ear measurement, and even fewer follow comprehensive Best Practice guidelines in their patient care.

When hearing aids are not fit using comprehensive Best Practices, they often fail to meet the user's needs. This can lead to poor sound quality, discomfort, and ultimately, the hearing aids ending up in a drawer.?

Research shows that individuals who do not receive care according to Best Practices are better off saving their money or opting for basic amplifiers rather than premium hearing aids.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing the transformation in patients who finally experience hearing aids that are fit and programmed correctly.

For instance, I once worked with a patient who had almost given up on hearing aids after several failed attempts with different providers. By following Best Practices, including REM, quality control using Hearing Instrument Test-Box (HIT) measures, and a structured follow-up plan, we were able to significantly improve his hearing experience.?

He went from being frustrated to enjoying conversations with his family again and engaging in social activities he had previously avoided.

So…What Can I Do?
