Happy Father's Day!
This year's Father's Day is on Sunday, June 18. We celebrate and honor all fathers and father figures who provide, protect, and care for their loved ones. Thank you for all you do to sustain your families and communities - you are loved and appreciated everyday!?
Happy Juneteenth!
Juneteenth is celebrated to honor and remember a special milestone in Black history: June 19, 1865. On this day, the news that "slaves are all free" finally reached those who have been enslaved in Galveston, Texas - two and half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Freedom came late for them, but it marks the beginning of change in their lives and futures.
Notice: In observance of Juneteenth, we will be closed for business on Monday, June 19, 2023. Business will resume on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. Our young adult shelter and youth drop-in center will remain open during this time.

Urban League's Vacating Records Programs Helps People Get A Fresh Start
The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle (ULMS) has a long history of assisting individuals of color, dating back to 1930. One of the challenges faced by some individuals is having a criminal record, which can hinder their future prospects. Recognizing this issue, ULMS has implemented a Vacating Records Program to help those in need.
Black Health Matters: Volume 2
It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic affected Black people the most, and it highlighted the disparities that were already causing poor health outcomes in our community. In fact, the same inequities that make Black people more vulnerable to COVID-19 also lead them to having higher rates of most diseases and worst outcomes from cancer. If we know what widens health gaps, then we know what will close them. We’ve put together a second volume of our public health equity guide called Black Health Matters: Preventative Care & Screenings to help start conversations for change and empower people to be a health advocate for themselves and for their community!

[RECAP] Snag-a-Job Hiring & Resource Fair
A job well done! On May 11, 2023, over 150 job seekers attended the ULMS Snag-a-Job Hiring & Resource Fair, with at least 30 people filling out one or more applications. Additionally, our partners at Sound Transit hired 30 people on the spot! We want to thank everyone who came to apply, interview, and workshop their resumes. Special thank you to our partners and various employers who participated and promoted their jobs, internships, and various opportunities for work! Another special thank you to our staff and volunteers who helped put the event together.
[RECAP] Young Professionals + BAX Day
Our friends at Blacks at Xbox (BAX) hosted the YPs on Microsoft's campus! We had so much fun touring one of their studios, 343 Industries, talk about the Black experiences in the tech industry, and play some games at the end! Special thank you to our amazing hosts and panelists from the BAX and 343 team for a very honest and insightful conversation about breaking into the gaming industry while Black.
If you're not plugged in with YPs already, learn more about how get involved with our chapter by clicking the button below.
[RECAP] Compassion Fatigue Training
The National Alliance of Mental Health (NAMI) invited ULMS to a Compassion Fatigue Training at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. As we continue to serve our community, it's becoming increasingly important to be aware of compassion fatigue -- the physical, emotional, and psychological exhaustion that leads to the feeling that you have no more compassion or empathy left to give. This is often a result of being exposed to the trauma others when working directly with victims of disasters, trauma, or illness. Helping others without replenishing yourself can be overwhelming, so it's important to be able to recognize signs of compassion fatigue early on and take proactive steps for self-care.
[RECAP] The Dangers of Vaping
Behavioral Health Navigator Jarvis Betts and Community Engagement Organizer Nick Jeffreys spoke to students last weekend at Washington Middle School in the Central District about the dangers of vaping. About 25 students participated in activities that demonstrated the effects of vaping. The kids entered a competition to make a one minute presentation about vaping. Huge thank you to the faculty of Washington Middle School for their collaboration with ULMS to make this program possible!
