Thanks to those that attended the recent RoundTable in Cairns, and the pre-event Masterclass.?For those that didn’t attend, do you know what you’re missing??Just ask one of the attendees,?as feedback has been excellent, both in terms of the topics and presenters and the venue and host destination, facilitated by hosts North Queensland Airports and Tourism Tropical North Queensland. For the first time, the 2024 RoundTable moves to New Zealand… look out for more details in the coming months for the event to be held 19-21 June, 2024.?Some highlights of the recent event in CNS are shown below.?One of the topics discussed, was recovery on the Tasman, and from Australia from various markets globally – this month we include snapshots from that analysis.

Understanding your catchment and ensuring you’re serving their travel needs or aspirations assists your destination in securing air service.?In locations where travel between and from multiple points can be undertaken, travel data from mobile phones helps in knowing your airport’s ability to draw passengers to your airport.?Below, we have taken an analysis in the Los Angeles region, to understand where the concentration of travellers are using either Haneda or Narita.?Whilst a strong catchment around LAX is evident for both, BUR is surrounded to the south by large concentrations.?Deeper analysis also gives us an understanding globally where larger catchments exist, even if booking data can’t distinguish between a resident in one catchment, using another airport in an adjourning catchment.

DATA Insight: Chinese Outbound Seat Capacity?

Recovery continues to lag on the Tasman, as carriers remain absent, and returning or new 5th freedom flying (such as that announced by Batik Air, from PER to AKL) isn’t quite enough yet to return capacity to pre-COVID levels.?With a lack of seat supply still evident, higher airfare prices may continue for some time yet.?Will the new project sunrise flights starting in SYD, and transiting from AKL to New York make much dent on prices on the Tasman?

Similarly, ex-Australia, it’s a similar story, as wide-body flight re-instatement recovery is slow, and capacity is yet to return.?What’s telling, is which markets especially are slow in returning to pre-pandemic volumes and destinations, while new air services can only slightly replace volumes not yet re-instated from services by airlines that were previously operating.
