I Help Mid-Career Professionals Find a Job They Love or Love the Job They Have // Executive & Career Transition Coach // Host - The Mid-Career GPS Podcast
Finding a new job can feel like a full-time job. After all, you’ve got a lot to do between looking for jobs, applying to them, and networking. But what happens when you aren’t getting the results you want??
With companies being more and more selective in hiring talent and dealing with their issues of being understaffed and overworked, it can be frustrating when your timeline doesn’t match with their timeline.?
Do you know how long it takes to get hired after submitting your resume online??
In an article by Ken Chase for Top Resume entitled,?How Long Will It Take to Find a Job in 2022??you can expect your job search to take some time. “The average job search may take around five to six months from application to hire. Before the pandemic, the BLS (Bureau of Labor and Statistics) showed that the average search took roughly five months, so it’s reasonable to assume that 2022 will look more like 2019.”?
And those numbers are in line with what I see as well.?
But those numbers don’t have to be your numbers.?
For example, we know that finding a new job is a numbers game. The more jobs you apply to, the greater your chance of getting that “yes.” But you can increase your chances when you are more intentional about the types of jobs you are applying to.?
What do you think when you look at a job posting??
Do you think you are not good enough??
Do you wonder if you have enough skills required for the job??
Do you question whether or not you can talk confidently about how your skills are valuable during the job interview??
OR?
Do you know a company is out there looking for someone exactly like you? The only thing is, you have to find each other??
Do you know you are more than qualified to do that job??
Do you look at the job posting and get excited about how you can help them because of your skills and can’t wait to share during the interview?
Let me offer this tip.?
Create Your Own Metric for Applying for Positions.?
Before you begin looking at job postings, establish some type of parameter about how closely aligned your skillset is to the job posting to determine if you will apply to it.?
For example, let’s say you decide to apply for any job that meets at least 60% of your skills listed in the job description. As you look at each bullet, determine how well your skills match the job posting. You have some data about how much you believe you are an excellent fit. If you believe your skills match 60% or higher, apply for the job. If not, keep looking.?
This will help you apply with more intention instead of throwing your resume out there, hoping someone will like it.?
Responding to postings on job boards is just one way to find a job. It should not be your only method. Leverage your network. Engage them. Include them in conversations about what you are looking for, but always remember to serve your network first. Givers get.?
It’s like that saying, “Work smarter. Not harder.”
And remember, how you SHOW UP matters.
