July - Should I learn Rust?, Free AI note taker
In this months addition:
Job market observations
July has seen a lull in job creation as many businesses tighten their belts or carefully assess budgets prior to opening new positions. Defence firms and related suppliers seem to are the outliers, thanks to their long-term budgets and planning.
My inbox has been flooded with engineers from Dyson seeking employment following the announcement of 600 redundancies in the UK. ?Numerous businesses in the South West are fully capitalising on the opportunity.
Should you learn Rust?
Startups are increasingly adopting Rust for its reliability and performance benefits, while very established companies find it harder to transition due to compatibility with their existing systems. Although Rust is gaining traction among experienced developers for its safety and performance, it still doesn’t break into the top 10 most widely used languages and there are not an abundance of opportunities out there.
Proficiency in Rust could be a significant differentiator in the future job market though, opening doors to roles in performance-critical and safety-conscious fields.
Embedded.com has some introductory articles on Rust and its current place in embedded systems if this is all new to you.
Retention Refined ???
Our recent webinar "Revolutionising Retention" with Russell Beck was a resounding success, probably our most popular yet.
Russell, an author, advisor and ex-engineer, talked about how to keep employees happy and ways to retain them. He shared some great insights on what employees need to succeed and do their best work, focusing on the 6 C's of employee satisfaction.

Fathom - AI Notetaker
This week, I tested a new note-taking application and the outcome has been very positive. What's really great is that the free version is quite functional, and it's supposed to be free indefinitely. It works with Teams, Zoom, and Google Meet (though I've only used it with Teams).
Much better than copilot so far.? Check it out at https://fathom.video/
