July Motives Met Monthly: The Latest Research, Inspo, & Info

July Motives Met Monthly: The Latest Research, Inspo, & Info

Can you believe tomorrow is August 1st?! Summer is flying by. It's been filled with beach volleyball tournaments (one of my passions!) and catching sunsets. My pup Dasher and I have really been living our best sandy lives with quality beach time in San Diego. We've slowed down a bit to savor summer, dive into some great beach reads (check out my new recommendations below), and enjoy quality time outdoors with family and friends.

But don't worry, we haven't been slacking off too much, we've been working on some cool stuff too! And truth be told it was 50/50 whether I was going to get this July newsletter out by today or if it would be hitting your inbox in August. We've had some last-minute team offsite and workshop requests from awesome leaders like you in the last few weeks, and we just couldn’t say no!

In this edition of Motives Met Monthly, I'm sharing some highlights, including a talk I gave this month "What Makes a Work Life Well-Lived?" It's based on my book, and there's a clip below if you want to check it out.

Hope you soak up all of the August sunshine!

Cheers to a summer well-lived,

Kelly

Monthly Motive Leadership Reflection & Tips

If you have been following Motives Met for some time, you know we uncovered 28 psychological, emotional, and social human needs that are at the heart of thriving at work. This month the spotlight is on the FAIRNESS motive. Research fielded worldwide among 3,500 employees found only 18% of employees said they worked in a high-fairness environment. This motive can suffer greatly in many workplaces.

The FAIRNESS Motive Summary

Leadership Motive Reflection

? How do I ensure that decision-making processes on my team are transparent and fair? ? Am I creating an inclusive environment with psychological safety and trust where everyone feels comfortable voicing concerns about unfairness and equity?

? What personal biases and beliefs do I hold, and how might they influence my decisions and interactions at work that negatively impact FAIRNESS?

Leadership Motive Tips

? Demonstrate a commitment to transparency in your own communication and decision-making processes. Be open and honest with your team members, share information proactively, and encourage dialogue.

? Stay informed about best practices in promoting FAIRNESS and equity. Attend workshops, read relevant books, and engage in discussions about fair practices in the workplace.

? Seek FAIRNESS feedback. Ask questions like, "What do you feel is fair and unfair in our current work environment?" and "Can you share an example where you felt treated fairly or unfairly?" Anonymous surveys, along with courageous conversations, can be a good way to gather some insights.

PODCAST RECOMMENDATIONS

I just love it when two people I am a big fan of get together to talk about how to make work better. Check out these two awesome duos:

RESEARCH

?? The 2024 State of Workplace Empathy Report is full of eye-opening insights. The report shows that while everyone talks a good game about empathy, it's often more myth than reality in the office. A staggering 52% of CEOs describe their workplaces as toxic, and 63% say it's hard to demonstrate empathy in their day-to-day.

ARTICLES

?? There was no shortage of drama and emotionally charged Linkedin posts this month with the SHRM announcement that they’re removing “Equity” from what used to be their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy. Kim Rohrer , cofounder of Peak HR, wrote a great article about it, "What the F*ck is Going on with SHRM?"
