July Monthly Research Recap

July Monthly Research Recap

In case you missed it: In July, NICHD shared news about a surgical procedure that allows amputees to walk with a more natural gait, the link between mood disorders and driving ability among youth, and the long-term effects of umbilical cord milking.

Check out these highlights:

  • A new surgical technique provided below-knee amputees with a robotic limb controlled by the nervous system, allowing them to walk quickly and naturally. Learn more at https://go.nih.gov/565jmlg.

  • Youth with mood disorders, such as depression, were less likely than their peers to obtain a driver’s license in an NICHD-funded analysis. Moreover, newly licensed youth with mood disorders were more likely to have moving violations and crashes. Find out more at https://go.nih.gov/ApLzaut.

  • Among non-vigorous term and near-term infants, umbilical cord milking does not appear to increase the risk of brain injury, compared with early cord clamping, suggesting it offers a safe alternative for moving blood into the body. https://go.nih.gov/nkopaX8
