Tel Aviv moves up to 5th place in annual ranking of best global tech ecosystems :?I always thought these rankings were a bit silly, but I digress. My first impression on being back in Israel, especially in Tel Aviv was that the vibe was not great. The political and economic situation had people on edge… but frankly, I felt the same energy in some places in the US as well. Just like about everything in Israel, it’s more intense (and the stakes are higher).

Despite the mood, the same frantic energy was pervasive in Tel Aviv as in the past, and with that, it was business as usual. The tech market is not what it was a year ago, and many startups are struggling, but people push on and forward. Also, I didn’t get the impression that people are throwing in the towel and leaving the country (though Israelis love to threaten they will), but instead are out in the streets challenging the proposed overhaul. So, like any historical cycle, things are currently tough, but tough times create tough people who can push through.

A note on focus, I don’t know how anyone gets any work done in Tel Aviv. While it was a lot of fun, and there is an emphasis on work/life balance, I believe there are times (or seasons) in our lives where we need to hyper focus on one thing. Personally, I believe creating an environment which encourages deep work in order to accomplish your professional goals is vital, but more on that TBA.
