July Celebration of the Mental Health of Communities of Color: Centering Diversity, Resilience, and Empowerment for Community Wellbeing

In the quest for a more inclusive and equitable society, July is a time to acknowledge and celebrate the mental health of communities of color, also known as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color).? The rich cultures, triumph over adversity, and empowerment of these groups have built a strong foundation for mental health. It is imperative that we embrace and amplify our voices, stories, and achievements. In this blog post, we will delve into the significance of this month and explore ways to support and uplift mental health in communities of color throughout the year.

Understanding the Purpose of this Observance

In 2008, Congress passed a resolution to establish the month of July as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This observance was named for a celebrated African American author who was a pioneer in focusing mental health advocacy on racially marginalized populations. Over the past 15 years, this month has been a catalyst for developing culturally centered mental health campaigns and the presentation of educational programs.? These initiatives have sought to increase knowledge about the mental health of diverse and underserved communities and place in context the historical, cultural, and social realities that underlie disparities in access to and utilization of culturally affirming mental health care. In addition, this observance has been a catalyst for raising awareness about the systemic marginalization and erasure our communities have faced through racism, which hurts mental health. Bringing these issues to the forefront every July is an opportunity to foster a deeper understanding of our struggles, achievements, and the ongoing fight for equity in mental health.

Honoring Diversity

One critical element in celebrating the mental health of communities of color is the acknowledgment of the incredible richness of cultural diversity within and among these communities. Each community brings its unique traditions, rituals, languages, art forms, and perspectives, contributing to the vibrant tapestry of our society. Recognizing and appreciating this diversity fosters a sense of unity and pride and promotes vibrant cultural exchange and dialogue.

Overcoming Adversity and Thriving

Throughout history, our communities of color have faced immense challenges and systemic oppression. However, our ability to join together in collective action and creativity to persevere with strength and resolve has allowed us to overcome adversity and thrive.? Navigating through trials and tribulations, we have harnessed our grit and determination to significantly contribute to various fields, including art, science, literature, politics, and activism. In many ways, we have exemplified mental health, the ability to adapt to change and cope with stress, as our communities have survived and still survive as we keep on keeping on. July provides an opportunity to honor the leaders and trailblazers, like Bebe Moore Campbell, who played a vital role in drawing attention to the importance of investing in the mental health of communities of color.

Amplifying Voices and Stories

Use this month as a platform to amplify the voices and stories that are often marginalized or silenced. Let us encourage the exploration of diverse narratives, experiences, and perspectives. By actively listening and engaging with these stories, we can cultivate empathy, challenge our biases, and promote a more inclusive society, especially regarding mental health.

Supporting BIPOC Communities Year-Round

While July is a month designated for celebrating the mental health of communities of color, supporting and uplifting our communities throughout the year is crucial. Here are some practical ways to make a difference:

  • Education: Engage in continuous learning about the histories, cultures, and experiences of communities of color and their mental health. Read books, watch films, and listen to podcasts by authors, filmmakers, and creators from our communities.
  • Amplify Voices: Use your platform and privilege to amplify the voices of people from communities of color. Share our stories, achievements, and perspectives through social media, blogs, and other forms of media.
  • Support Businesses Owned by People from Communities of Color: Patronize and support businesses we own in your community. This can directly and positively impact economic growth and empowerment, supporting mental health.
  • Advocate for Equity: Advocate for policies and initiatives that promote equity and dismantle systemic barriers faced by communities of color. Support organizations and campaigns working towards racial justice and equality.
  • Cultivate Inclusive Spaces: Create and maintain inclusive spaces where individuals from communities of color feel welcomed, valued, and safe—Foster diversity and representation in your workplace, educational institutions, and social circles.

Conclusion

July is a designated time to honor the diversity, thriving, and empowerment of people from communities of color. Let us take significant steps toward building a more inclusive and equitable society by celebrating communities' mental health and our contributions and amplifying our voices. Let us embrace the spirit of Bebe Moore Campbell and her vision in July and throughout the year as we work together to create a world that values and uplifts all its members.
