July & August Newsletter - Job Search During Summer

The hiring push period is usually from January to May, so there’s less of a need by the time the summer comes around. The summer months are usually much slower. Managers take more vacations, and getting a team together to conduct interviews or make hiring decisions is harder. If you’re job searching right now and can’t find a job, this could be why.

That doesn’t mean companies stop hiring, it just means you need to search a little bit harder.

On the plus side, you can stand out easier because there are fewer applicants during July and August. Aim yourself with more patience to put up with vacations and other delays, and don’t expect to finish the interview process and get hired in one week.

While this info is to guide you, don’t overthink it. If you got laid off and need to find a job as soon as possible, of course you shouldn’t wait to start your job search.

What would be wise to do now if your job search is not an emergency?

?? If you decide not to apply during the summer months, work on getting your resume, your LinkedIn profile, and other tools (portfolio, website, etc.) in top shape. ?

?? Make a plan/strategize your job search for the beginning of September.

Here are some pointers that might help you:

1?? ??Identify industries that are actively hiring during summer.

Keep an open mind and explore sectors that thrive this season, such as tourism, hospitality, event planning, and outdoor recreation. Expand your horizons and consider how your skills and interests align with these industries.

?

2?? ??Step up your summer networking.

Summer is the perfect backdrop for networking events, career fairs, and outdoor meetups. Take advantage of the pleasant weather to attend professional gatherings, industry conferences, or even informal networking events. Building connections during this time can lead to valuable opportunities and create lasting relationships.

?

3?? ??Refresh your online presence.

Revamp your LinkedIn profile - update your headline, summary, add recent achievements, and optimize your profile with relevant keywords. Showcase your expertise and let recruiters know you're actively seeking new challenges.

?

4?? ??Become (stay) active on LinkedIn.

Despite the perception that summer is a slow hiring period, companies continue to post job opportunities throughout the year. Stay engaged on LinkedIn by following company pages, joining industry-specific groups, and setting up job alerts. You'll stay on recruiters' radars by actively participating in discussions and sharing valuable content.

?

5?? ??Leverage your summer experiences.

If possible, while job hunting, take advantage of summer activities to enhance your skills and boost your resume - volunteer work, short-term internships, or relevant online courses can be a perfect fit. Demonstrating your commitment to continuous growth and learning will make you stand out among other candidates.

?

6?? ??Embrace flexibility.

Hiring managers understand that many professionals take vacations during the summer. Communicate your flexibility and willingness to accommodate the interview process around scheduled time off. It's important to balance enjoying your summer and your job search efforts.

?

7?? ??Reflect and set goals.

Use this time to reflect on your career aspirations and set goals for the remainder of the year. Assess your skills, identify areas for improvement, and create an action plan to achieve your objectives. The summer provides an excellent opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth.

Remember, success often comes to those who persevere. While the summer months may present unique challenges in job searching, they also offer distinct advantages. So, try to make the most of this vibrant season, networking under the sun, and diving into exciting career opportunities.
