Learn Ahead: Transforming Workplace Learning with Artificial Intelligence
By Nina Barreca , Learning Futurist?
In recent months, I have been witnessing and studying with optimism the impact of new technologies on individuals within workplaces. Generative artificial intelligence systems are now creating courses, assessments, and real-time learning content. These platforms also send alerts based on a wide range of business conditions, thereby improving the timeliness of decision-making.
Recent data from Gartner and the World Economic Forum suggest that technology is advancing so rapidly that we cannot presume to stay constantly updated on its evolution. Therefore, how do we avoid succumbing to stimuli arriving so quickly? How do we protect ourselves within such a rapidly changing context? The answer lies in our commitment to continuous learning and adaptation, including the concept of Fusion Skilling.
Fusion Skilling involves structuring, reinforcing, and recombining skills that enhance our relationship with technology. As industry professionals, we must embrace an approach that encourages human-machine co-creation and collaboration, recognizing that our unique human skills are integral to the new frontier in skill development.
Leaders in learning and development must reflect on the role of traditional training in an era where people have access to highly intelligent systems. Human resources departments must evaluate how to keep older systems relevant and teach employees how to query artificial intelligence effectively. Additionally, there is a critical need to foster a unified vision within organizations to align the contributions of each resource participating in this transformative process.
Furthermore, guiding the innovation process requires strong leadership committed to supporting individuals through their resistance to change and guiding them beyond the uncertainties generated by the unknown.?Once we initiate change, we must create supportive dynamics—such as reinforcement, empowerment, and continuity—to ensure that these changes translate into daily actions and ultimately become ingrained in organizational culture.
Lastly, it is essential to remember that technology is not infallible despite its advancements. Even models like ChatGPT may exhibit "hallucinations." Therefore, individuals must develop critical evaluation skills to assess outcomes effectively.?
While artificial intelligence presents extraordinary opportunities, a careful approach is necessary. Human resources practices are evolving to meet these challenges and pave the way for future success, but the journey ahead remains long and complex.
Human resources must take on a new role: extracting knowledge from systems, establishing responsibilities, and ensuring appropriate governance. Encouraging critical thinking is paramount to navigating this technological revolution successfully.
