The July 2024 Payroll and Reward Brunch

The State Opening of Parliament on 17 July 2024 was marked by the King’s Speech (read by him but written by the new UK Labour Government).? So, we are off with a new UK Parliamentary session and a raft of Bills to digest.

For payroll and reward professionals, though, there really are only four UK Government Bills to spark our interest.? One has the potential to be a big game-changer for employers and software developers but is no surprise as it was outlined in Labour’s ‘Delivering A New Deal for Working People’ published ahead of the General Election and referred to in their Manifesto.?

So, let’s spend an hour cutting through what matters to payroll and reward professionals for employers and agents of any size.? I want to focus on the following:?

• The carry-over from the previous Conservative UK Government.? HMRC would refer to these as legacy issues, i.e. things that happened before.? However, they have not gone away
• The four bills in the King’s Speech that impact payroll and reward professionals when they are introduced into the UK Parliament

The UK voted for change at the General Election but, in all honesty, nobody really like it!? So, as always and as is necessary, I will look at what the changes are, where they apply and what they mean in practice.?
