Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR): Steering businesses to a green future
In the ever-changing landscape of environmental responsibility, the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) framework continues to be a beacon of transparency and accountability.
Here is a reminder of what SECR is, why it matters, and how your business can use it to its advantage.
Why Display Energy Certificates are more than just paperwork
Display Energy Certificates (DECs) are essential documents that provide information about the energy performance of buildings and details of a public building’s energy use, as well as its carbon emissions.
Part of the Energy Performance of Buildings Regulations, DECs are a legislative requirement for buildings accessed by the public that have received funding from the public sector.
Accompanied by a Recommendation Report, these certificates play a crucial role in promoting energy efficiency. We have asked our Energy Consultant, Blessing Amin, to highlight the benefits of DECs.
Six business benefits of complying with ESOS
With the ESOS Phase 3 deadline fast approaching, we are exploring the significant benefits of complying with schemes that aim to support businesses in taking positive steps towards reducing their carbon footprint.

We have joined the UKGBC to support sustainability in the Built Environment Sector
The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to transforming the built environment for a sustainable future. With over 700 members they represent the unified voice of current and future leaders in the sector and drive positive change through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and advocacy.
By becoming part of this influential industry network, we have the opportunity to contribute to the UKGBC’s mission to make a collective impact by positively influencing policy and identifying sustainable pathways for the future of buildings and infrastructure.
We are a proud member of The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC)
Focusing on the post-16 education sector, EAUC provides a system that creates a world with sustainability at its heart. As a consultancy business that supports the education sector with carbon and energy management, we advocate the association’s vision.
The EAUC promotes holistic whole organisation approaches where leadership and governance, estates and operations, teaching and learning and collaborations are all actively driving sustainability. As a business, we recognise the challenges that the sector faces in delivering exceptional education, managing complex energy estates and providing optimum learning facilities, often on stretched budgets. Through our services, we partner with colleges and universities across the UK to alleviate them from the burden of fulfilling their energy strategies, implementing energy saving projects and supporting them in reaching their emissions targets.
Energy Wholesale Market Review
In this month’s Wholesale Market Review gas and power have been mixed. Gas has fallen throughout July due to a mixture of maintenance works across the Norwegian and the UK Continental Shelf. Due to an increase in wind generation at the beginning of the month, power day-ahead power rose 2.5% to £80.74/MWh, then dropped 9.2% to £73.29/MWh as a result of reduced wind output.

Amazon Achieved 100% Renewable Energy Target In 2023
Amazon has announced they have achieved a key environmental milestone in which all electricity consumed by its operations in 2023 was “matched” with 100% renewable energy, a claim some experts say is vague on details as the tech giant released its annual sustainability report.
Octopus launches testing hub for integrating clean tech devices
Octopus Energy announced that its tech platform, Kraken, has launched an ‘energy tech superhub’ in Manchester, which will operate as a testing hub for integrating third party devices with the Kraken platform. Octopus stated that, by integrating with Kraken, clean tech devices such as electric vehicles and heat pumps can draw power from the grid when it is cheapest and greenest and export back when prices are higher. Kraken has secured over a dozen partners for the launch, including automotive leaders, battery and chargepoint developers, and heat pump providers.
Onshore wind ban lifted by new Labour government
The new Labour Government has announced plans to lift the effective ban on new onshore wind developments in England.
Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, announced the removal of two restrictive planning policy tests that set a higher bar for local consent to onshore wind than for other forms of development.
RenewableUK chief executive Dan McGrail welcomed the “long overdue” move which he said showed the new government is “determined to act fast” in tackling barriers to developing clean energy infrastructure. The news came just days after Labour won the General Election in a landslide victory.
UK Government approves three major solar farms, promises rooftop solar ‘revolution’
The Department for Energy Security and Net-Zero (DESNZ) has granted planning permissions for the construction of three major solar farms in the east of England, in a bid to decarbonise UK’s electricity system by 2030.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband sets out his priorities for the department
In a message from the UK’s Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, following his appointment as the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, he highlighted the importance of boosting energy independence and leading on international climate action as among the priorities for the department.
Miliband, who previously served as Energy Secretary in Gordon Brown’s UK Government between 2008-10, also highlighted the need for action to cut energy bills.
Former CEO of the Climate Change Committee, Chris Stark, Head of Mission Control
Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, has appointed former Climate Change Committee CEO, Chris Stark, as the Head of Mission Control. The new control centre is tasked with delivering clean power by 2030.
DESNZ states that the new Mission Control will be a “one-stop shop, bringing together a team of industry experts to troubleshoot, negotiate and clear the way for energy projects”, with areas of focus including setting and tracking the overall approach to delivering 2030 across the energy system, real time monitoring of progress on UK infrastructure projects critical to 2030, and acting as an innovation centre by encouraging discussion among experts.
Climate Change Committee: UK off track for net zero
The UK’s Climate Change Committee (CCC) has issued its 2024 Progress Report to Parliament, which examines how the UK is tracking in its emission reduction and makes recommendations on how the country can meet its net zero target.
The report found that only a third of the emissions reductions required to achieve the UK’s 2030 target (reducing emissions by 68% compared to 1990 levels) are currently covered by credible plans. As this is the first UK target set in line with net zero, which the CCC states we are not on track to meet, the committee details recommendations to get back on track by 2030. These recommendations include reinstating the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel car sales, planning strategically for the decarbonisation of public sector buildings, and publishing a comprehensive strategy to close the green skills gaps.
Boost for new National Wealth Fund to unlock private investment
The UK Government has announced new plans to align key institutions under the National Wealth Fund that will boost growth and unlock investment.
£7.3bn of additional funding will be allocated through the UK Infrastructure Bank so investments can start immediately, focusing on further priority sectors and catalysing private investment at an even greater scale. This funding is in addition to existing UK Infrastructure Bank funding.
