July 2024 Edition

In this edition, it's part 1: Going Remote

Going Solo

There are advantages to going solo, for sure. It’s travel on your terms. When and where you choose.

I thought it would be a life of Shangri-La. Smooth sailing.

But we are human creatures who crave connections and communication.

I used to get annoyed travelling with my parents and family.

You know the phrase, “Can’t live with them, can’t live without them.”

Why do they want to be up and about when I want to sleep in?

Why do they want to eat when I’m not hungry?

Why don’t they do what I want?

Was I a difficult child? Ha ha

Being dragged from one place to another

But looking back, they were precious moments that cannot be recreated

It’s a strange emotion that wants connection

Growing up wanting independence yet yearning for home comforts

It’s something of a measurement you need to take into account

Our inner needs let us know how much of each

A salt and pepper existence.

Life, though doesn’t dish it out this way

It can feel chaotic and unexpected.

However, it this that makes our lives unique

The moments when we are out and about observing the world

And the moments when talking to others becomes insightful and fun

Choose your measure and the privilege of doing so when going solo

A Remote Life

It sounds like a rite of passage.

To prove to yourself you are not tied to one place or time of your choosing

The Internet connection is becoming easier and easier.

“Wherever I lay my hat, I’ll call my home” is never truer than today

Equally though, a remote life can also be challenging

You’ve solved the where question

How to get there

Where to stay

You have your digital nomad visa

Your budget is sorted

All you have to do now is go and live this new life

And be the productive and free-living person you’ve always dreamed of.

Having done a fair amount of solo travel, though, teaches you other stuff

Creating routines:

Yep, we are creatures of habits. They bring us internal and external stability.

It’s different for all of us. Perhaps you like a coffee.

Perhaps you like a walk or a run

Perhaps it’s meditation.

I suggest adding small, easily transportable items that remind you of your why.

What you like doing:

It’s vital you include it every day. It’s part of the why, the who we are question.

If you love books, have a few around you. Physical and digital.

Love the beach, be near enough to include its sounds and smells

For writers, it’s a notepad or device to get your thoughts down

As a traveller, it’s about making time for it. Journeys and destinations go together like apples and pears.

Stepping outside yourself:

You’ve got your routines and passions up and running.

What about personal growth? You’ve come this far.

Rather than saying you can’t do something, replace it with what if I could.

Take on a new project, learn new skills, and speak to people. Be curious.

Be someone who notices things:

We can be so focused on rushing about or getting on with that one thing

We can forget to appreciate daily moments.

The taste of your favorite meal

The smell of your coffee

Or observing the daily moments of life. Human and nature.

Bring out your inner Christopher Columbus and explore:

Go visit another coffee shop or another neighbourhood.

New experiences equal new perspectives

Creating new habits:

Yep, it is the opposite of your existing routines

But this is a chance to create some new ones

A walk or series of walks you’ve always wanted to do

Or finding new routes to destinations.

Or reaching out to new connections online.

Recording your journey:

You’re doing something different

Start a journal that you contribute to each day

See how far you’ve come and what you can achieve.

It’s also something you can go back to for inspiration.

Remember to like yourself:

When looking for and living out your dreams

It’s important to remind yourself why

You’re not there to fail but to succeed

Striving towards your goals is equally important

If not the most important

The end goal may look a little different by the time you reach it

Enjoy it and be grateful for it each day.

London Airport 1964

Seeing Travel Through the Eyes of a Child

Ever since the younger version of myself visited this busy airport, travel has been in my blood.

It filled me with excitement and anticipation at a level I never thought possible.

It changed me more than my dreams. I'm so grateful my parents were travellers too.

My mission is that all people have this opportunity.

When I speak to travel professionals, I learn about the diversity of our world and the enthusiasm in which it is talked about.

The world deserves to be explored and done so responsibly. Together we can make this happen.
