Digitalization has driven a major shift in air cargo operations since the pandemic illustrated a need to pivot to a more modern business approach. Integrating innovative technologies improves efficiency, increases safety, saves time and reduces costs.?
From automation in warehouses, digital tracking, sustainable technologies, AI for predictive forecasting and more, there are myriad ways to integrate digital tools into everyday workflows.?
On the surface, there doesn’t seem to be a downside to digitalization. But with technological improvements come new challenges and not all of these have solutions yet.?Supply chain operators are asking if AI should be regulated and how? Will more technology increase cybersecurity risks? Will reliance on automation eliminate jobs?
The air cargo industry’s increasing adoption of digitalization in the wake of the pandemic is proving how vital the technology is for stakeholders across the supply chain.?
AI is the buzzword of the day, but Internet of Things (IoT) technology is gaining traction as a solution for cargo tracking and warehouse management.
“Companies want comprehensive visibility from the start to the finish of their supply chain processes,” Scott Sangster, general manager at Canadian technology company Descartes Systems Group, told Air Cargo Next. “IoT allows air cargo stakeholders to improve cargo tracking and provide the enhanced level of real-time supply chain visibility required by companies shipping goods via air.”?
Whether transporting pharmaceuticals on a large or small scale, the pharma supply chain is about saving lives. A large shipment of quinine can protect an entire town from malaria while a shipment of a single organ can save one person.?
Delivering pharma in time and in good condition requires “understanding the requirements of everybody across the board,” Jennifer Haigh, head of specialty products for the Americas at United Cargo, said in Air Cargo Next’s webinar “Air Cargo and Pharma: Using Technology to Save Lives.” “We all have our bits and pieces that we need to focus on but knowing what’s needed from that person who’s handing [the cargo] off to us is key so we can do our part.”
Industry stakeholders must connect through conferences and webinars, as well as on a personal level, to ensure that everyone is on the same page, Eric ten Kate, global health care sector leader at Ceva Logistics, said in the webinar.

Chinese drone manufacturer DJI successfully completed drone delivery trials on Mount Everest in April.?
The DJI FlyCart 30 drone carried three oxygen bottles and 1.5 kilograms of other supplies from Everest Base Camp at 5,300 meters above sea level (ASL) to Camp 1 at 6,000 meters ASL, according to a release from DJI last month. On the return trip, the drone carried trash down the mountain.
“The ability to safely transport equipment, supplies and waste by drone has the potential to revolutionize Everest mountaineering logistics, facilitate trash cleanup efforts and improve safety for all involved,” DJI Senior Corporate Strategy Director Christina Zhang said in the release.
