July 20, 2020 - Day 8

Today’s centering thought: I expect and accept abundance to flow easily to me.
Today’s share is all about listening. I actually listened to this podcast on Saturday as background noise while I was doing something and this morning, I realized needed to hear it again. (I’m not sure if that means I was listening the first time, or if maybe I could have been more tuned in)
What stood out for me was a quote they referenced from Lady Randolph Churchill:
"When I left the dining room after sitting next to Gladstone, I thought he was the cleverest man in England. But when I sat next to Disraeli, I left feeling that I was the cleverest woman."
This is so impactful. The way we listen to people has such an impact on how they feel and shapes so much of our interactions. When I think about helping people and wanting to contribute to making the world better, it’s important to hear what the world needs and what they want. In a world where talking seems so validated and valued, I’m reminded of “one mouth, two ears”. That was god telling us we should do one 2x more than the other.
Feeling heard is a pretty great feeling. Feeling seen is an amazing feeling. It makes me wonder what we are doing to make sure that during this time we are seeing our employees. What are we doing to make sure we are hearing their needs? I know there are a lot of surveys. I know that we love to collect data. Believe me, I am one of those people who is trying to use the data to figure out how we best support our employees. But is the data enough listening? What about the human, “face to face”, listening that really makes you feel heard in the moment? Are we doing enough of that?
