Today’s centering thought: Compare yourself to yourself
“The only valid comparisons are between myself as I am and myself as I used to be” is one of my favorite ideas. It can be hard to not get caught up in what others are doing or what they say. This quote just brings it back for me.
I love to think about the day to day competition with myself. I’ve never been a person who weighs themselves. Somewhere in the 80s, the diet industry told people to weigh themselves every day and track their progress. That always confused me. You don’t lose weight in one day and see results immediately so how is the scale an accurate gauge? A diet, like everything else, is incremental change that we commit to each day and then eventually you start to see the results.
The book Atomic Habits by James Clear really highlighted this too. He talks about how everyday you do something, it’s like voting to be a runner, meditator, swimmer, communicator, or anything else. If you vote enough times to be that person, eventually, you realize you ARE that person. I’m struggling with this commitment to write each day. Last year, it felt easier. Today, I continue to vote for me as someone who writes each day.
Today’s share is from one of my favorite bloggers and marketing leaders, Seth Godin. His podcasts and blog posts always make me think and that’s all I’m ever looking for. Something to noodle on and challenge me to look at the world a little differently. They are also relatively short so very consumable. In this podcast, he looks at the concept of micro payments and for me shed light on the impact of the small things that add up to big outcomes. All the countless industries and business models that look to capitalize on almost unnoticeable interactions that when added up can be monetized and provide value.
