July 1. New Tomorrow. New Anesthesia Resident.

July 1. New Tomorrow. New Anesthesia Resident.

I just got off the phone with my new resident who starts her first day as an anesthesia resident. I am looking forward to my cup of coffee tomorrow morning. And I am looking forward to working with a fresh, energetic new resident. There is a lot to learn. And as a teacher, this is my wheelhouse, my fun, my reason for being at Yale and Yale New Haven Health. I am not the most talented person here, but I am surrounded by a lot of talented, intelligent and good -hearted colleagues.

The memory of my first day as a resident in anesthesia is as fresh as yesterday morning's sunrise. Except, in 2002, I was thrown into the water and had to learn how to swim quickly. It was not a kind or gentle introduction. It was UCSF. Expectations were high. The stakes were high. The tradition of excellence and performance was high. It was what it was. Since I did not kill or harm anyone my first day, I will call it a win. I would do it all over again and that says more than I can say.

As much as there is wrong with medicine, and as much as we need change we cannot control-- I can control what and how I teach tomorrow. Tomorrow is in my hands. Tomorrow will make a difference because I remember my first day as a resident in anesthesia. It is seared into my memory. And my resident's first day will be seared into her memory, too.

It is an honor and a privilege to be tasked with what I am going to do tomorrow. My North Star is caring for patients, teaching residents and CRNAs, research, writing, and learning as much as possible moving forward with an unwavering mission to make as much difference as I can. Being a physician has never been easy. Not everyone possesses the skills necessary to do what we do and teach what we teach.

I don't have the Sunday blues. I am looking forward to tomorrow. I am looking forward to making a difference.

Wonderful!! I so enjoy your perspective, and your insights renew my faith in the profession. So many places do make one dread their next shift. I want to work with people I’m proud to call colleagues, and who I know won’t forget about me the minute I am out of sight. I teach kindness, respect AND the nuances of medicine. Nothing less is sufficient.

I am doing the same tomorrow. And looking forward to it as well. It is an honor to be able to teach the next generation of physicians.
