Julia’s journey, an entrepreneur with a dream
This newsletter follows Julia, a fictious young woman with a big dream. Julia’s story might resonate with you, whether you are starting your own business, overcoming challenges, or celebrating success. Let's follow her journey together, from the initial idea to celebrating her eventual entrepreneurial success ??
An idea blossoms ??
Julia had been working as a stylist for years. But, deep down, she dreamed of something more: her own clothing brand. One Sunday afternoon, as she walked in the park with her niece, inspiration struck. She would start a brand focused on sustainable clothing created from recycled materials, made for young children. Her brand was to be called ‘Green Steps’ and it would be colorful and playful, just like children themselves.
But how do you turn a dream into reality? Julia began researching online how to draft a business plan, giving shape to her ideas and planning the initial steps. This allowed her to shape her ideas into a solid plan of action.
The first steps towards success
Julia knew that a good idea alone was not enough; she needed to research whether parents would really be interested in sustainable children's clothing. She did market research and immersed herself in her target audience. She also needed to draw up a financial plan. How much financial backing would she need to get her vision of ‘Green Steps’ off the ground?
Fortunately, she was able to find a handy step-by-step guide on how to draw up a financial plan. This gave her a clear overview of the costs, income and investments needed to realise her dream. She learned that a strong financial plan was important not only to convince potential investors, but also to have a clear picture of both her own and her business’ financial future.
Taking the plunge
After months of research and planning, Julia was ready to start! It felt like a leap of faith, but Julia knew she had to do this to make her dream come true. The name of her sustainable clothing line, ‘Green Steps’, was set. Now she had to settle on which legal structure best suited her situation. Would she go for a sole proprietorship, a general partnership (vof), or perhaps a limited liability company (bv)?
An overview of business structures on Business.gov.nl gave her the pros and cons of different legal structures that she needed. Julia opted for a sole proprietorship. This suited her start-up business best.
The path to growth ??
With her first collection launched and a small but growing customer base, Julia's business? began to grow slowly. Sales were going well, but she soon realised there were more opportunities than she had previously anticipated. Her brand received attention through a report on her local TV station, and Julia knew this was time to act. To grow her business further, Julia looked for ways to expand her business’ scope.

She found an overview of subsidies and schemes available to entrepreneurs focusing on sustainability. These subsidies allowed her to scale up her production and to develop new fabrics for her collection. This gave her the push she needed to continue growing her business.
Overcoming challenges
Entrepreneurship is not always easy. Julia faced her first major challenge when a production error occurred in her third collection. And a legal dispute arose with a supplier over contractual agreements.
Fortunately, she was well prepared. She had previously read important information on contracts and potential legal issues you might encounter as an entrepreneur. Using this knowledge to her advantage, and the help of an adviser, she managed to resolve the conflict while simultaneously improving her production process.
A dream comes true ??
Two years after its launch, ‘Green Steps’ had become a staple of children's clothing in the Netherlands. Looking abroad, Julia was invited to present her collection at sustainable fashion fairs across Europe. She decided it was once again time to expand, this time across borders!

With the help of Business.gov.nl, she immersed herself in conducting international business. Julia learned all about export regulations, foreign markets, and logistics. Step by step, ‘Green Steps’ grew into not only a national, but an international success story.
