Julia and Bill deliver a tour de force!

Meet our venue tour guides Julia and Bill who know our theatre inside and out – literally! Julia, a native of Birmingham, has been working at The Alex for ten years while Bill, originally from Glasgow, joined us in 2018.

As well as giving guests a glimpse into the inner workings of our theatre, Julia works front of house during performances. She’s also our resident historian and is currently curating an archive of materials documenting The Alex’s illustrious past. Bill, meanwhile, is our Building Safety Officer and is always on hand to make sure everything’s working as it should be while shows are running.

Both Julia and Bill are passionate about promoting the part The Alex has played in Birmingham’s cultural output over the years, and we’re giving them this special shout out during Heritage Week when we all come together to celebrate our city’s rich history, customs, and culture.

We also like to big up the sometimes-unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes here to make the magic happen on stage. It’s not all glitter and glamour, as anyone who joins our venue tours quickly find out. But we like to think our tours offer a fascinating insight into the art and business of theatre-making, covering everything from the mechanics of moving sets to facts and figures about our chandelier, the colour of our seats and even some unconventional clothes cleaning tips!
