Juggling Study in 2024

We've recently had one of our very experienced and much beloved trainers start another study journey. From this she has said that it has really put back into perspective what it means to be working part time and studying part time. So here is some of her advice on how to find more study time.

How to juggle study and life…….

Hello, my name is Catherine, and I am one of the trainers at Skills Gen.

I know that balancing study with work, placement, family, and life can be challenging. Some weeks, it can feel impossible. But that’s a completely normal feeling to have. I work at Skills Gen three days each week, am studying a full time course and attend placement 8 hours per week. There is not a lot of wiggle room.

To complete my assessments on time and not feel overwhelmed I have learnt a few study strategies that I wish to share with you.

1. Don’t beat yourself up—life is busy.

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed, but don’t let that stop you from pushing forward.

2. Contact your trainer via email.

Let your trainer know that you need support to get back into studying and ask for a one-on-one session to help you catch up.

3. Just open your computer and log into Cloud Assess.

Even if you’re feeling unmotivated, simply open your computer and take a look at the next question you need to answer. Focus on just one question at a time.

4. Join a Homework Club.

These are great for getting further support from your trainer and classmates.

5. Plan a study day each week.

Treat it like a workday or placement day. You may not be going to your workplace, but you’re still working—your workday is at home on your computer. For example, I work at Skills Gen on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. I attend placement at RSPCA Noosa on Thursdays. I still need a study day, so I’ve chosen Fridays. That’s when I work from home on my assessments—no excuses, I must show up each week and get the assessments done. Because of this, I’ve now completed all my assessments before their due dates and have Fridays free again! Don’t schedule appointments on your study day.

Remember, this is your workday at home, and you need to dedicate those hours to studying.

6. Start small if needed—just 3 hours.

If committing to a full day feels overwhelming, start with 3 hours of study. Each time you open your computer and study, you’ll get quicker at submitting assessments.

7. Focus on the positive changes that will come with your qualification.

Remind yourself of the benefits and opportunities that await you once you’ve completed your studies.

8. Use your trainer as a resource.

Your trainer is here to help, and when they can assist a student, it’s often the best part of their day. Don’t hesitate to reach out and make that connection.

9. Remember - just one question at a time.

Think of it like eating a cake: you don’t eat it all in one go, but savor it, one bite at a time. Approach your studies in the same way—one question at a time.

I have also created a video to help students get back into study. Have a look….
