Juggling courts and courses: my life as an athlete and apprentice.
Hello! I'm Maria, a 19-year-old degree apprentice in Digital Marketing at E.ON Next. I began this four-year apprenticeship in September 2022. It includes eight unique placements, each offering a deep dive into different business areas, enhancing my skills and contributions.
I've completed three different placements so far: Digital Customer Experience, Brand Campaigns, and Internal Communications & Engagement at E.ON. I'm now part of the Content team at E.ON Next , focusing on organic social media channels and a project to boost our Instagram presence. Moving to E.ON Next has been smooth and exciting, providing a broad view of how the different business units function.
I'm also studying for a Digital Marketing Undergraduate Degree at Nottingham Trent University. In my second year, I've gained considerable knowledge and developed critical marketing skills that I can directly apply to my job. The course covers a wide range of topics, from web analytics to campaign planning, blending creativity with analytical precision.
Before this, I completed A-Levels in Business, French, and Spanish, which led me to choose this apprenticeship over a more traditional university route. My passion for health and fitness, which sparked my interest in digital marketing, led me to create and manage successful social media accounts, particularly on TikTok and Instagram. These platforms have over 38,000 followers, enabling partnerships with brands like Myprotein and Muscle Food, inspiring me to start my own fitness coaching business.
Besides my academic and professional activities, I play international netball for Scotland's U21 and Manchester Thunder U21 squads. The discipline and teamwork from sports are invaluable, teaching me skills that benefit all areas of my life. Managing a demanding training schedule, work, study, and personal time requires thorough organisation and effective communication.

I balance these commitments by keeping a detailed schedule that outlines daily tasks and long-term goals. Staying flexible helps manage unexpected changes, while clear communication with colleagues, coaches, and clients ensures priorities are met. Prioritising health and rest is crucial for maintaining this rigorous schedule.
I tackle challenges with a positive attitude and resilience, valuing each day's opportunities and lessons. I appreciate the support from E.ON, especially their respect for my sports commitments, enabling me to thrive in all areas.
This apprenticeship is transformative. It offers both professional growth and personal development that influence my daily interactions and future ambitions. Each new role presents fresh challenges and learning opportunities, contributing to a cycle of continuous improvement and impact. As I look forward to what lies ahead, I'm equipped with a strong skill set and a supportive network.
