Keeping the Legacy alive

“Judge me as you know me, not how others portray me”

Those of you who know me personally or have attended one of my talks on Piper Alpha will have first-hand experience on how passionate I am about safety and ensuring that the memory of Piper Alpha remains foremost in all our minds, always.?You will also be aware of the fact that I am Chairman of the Pound for Piper Memorial Trust as many of you have donated generously to the cause.

?With this in mind I wanted to contact you all as recently my personal character and the integrity of the Pound for Piper Memorial Trust, has been brought into question on social media including LinkedIn.

?Till now I have chosen to ignore this however, I now feel that it’s important that I post links to sites that provide a full account of PfP’ s efforts to date, current status and the details of our proposal for re-design. ?I decided to do so as I want to ensure our intentions are reported factually and without creative editing.

My ask of those who know me, is that they take the time to review the information on these links to fully appreciate all the facts and current status of this proposal so they may form their own opinion on the intent of the Trust and my own motives for leading this development.

?After doing so I would appreciate if you would kindly share this post across your own personal networks so that the Trust can air its side of this discussion factually and widely.

?One of the concerns raised was that we were planning to go ahead with the redesign without consulting with families, survivors (I am 1 of the 61) or those directly impacted by Piper Alpha.?This could not be further from the truth as consultation was always going to be part of the process.

?What we at the Trust chose to do was to do a very well-planned public launch of proposed plans that included an animation so the consultation and discussions could begin. We also recognise that these plans are subject to consideration by Aberdeen City Council.

?We did so as we had no accurate means, or a definitive list, with contact details for those who lost loved ones, colleagues or like me, survived that night.?I do have personal contact details for some of those impacted however by contacting them only I would have put us in a position of informing some while others remained oblivious to our proposal, until the public launch, which I felt was not the best approach.

?In closing I want to thank all those who have been in touch offering their support.?My fellow Trustees and I look forward to planning for and ensuring the future of the gardens which are a very special place.

Lest We Forget….

Hi Steve. Those who know you would never question your integrity, intentions or passion for doing what you can to help our industry became safer. However those who don’t know you may let their hearts rule their heads and I guess it’s easy to lash out. Well done for your balanced post though and we look forward to being inspired and moved by your training sessions again soon. Deborah

Steve we live in a far safer environment offshore now than we ever have in the past, a lot of this is down to you my friend, there are a lot less of our generation left out there, you have read the book, seen the film and got the t shirt, your integrity is unquestionable, please keep up your good work for the sake of the future generations as your drive and commitment is from the heart through personal experience and loss there are some things that are not in the text book, “Stand Firm and Keep the Faith Steve, we judged you nearly 34 years ago

I worked offshore for just over 40 years, Steve Rae is a person that has been there seen it and done it. Because of him, and the work that he does, The North Sea is a safer place to work in, and May it continue.?
