Jubilee, life-work balance and purpose

At MANN+HUMMEL there is an annual event to celebrate years of company, called Tempo de Casa and, in my opinion, it is the most important celebration, even more than celebrating financial results and do you know why?

Because an employee's service contribution not only shows that the relationship between him/her and the company worked out, but also the RECOGNITION of both parties, as a true SYMBIOSIS.

Because the purposes of the company and the people who work here are aligned in such a way that it is very common for me to hear: “I have raised my children, who today are...”; “I built my house and left the rent”, “I left my city to change my life, I found support for my family and I decided to stay”, “my achievements are the result of my work and I am grateful”.

Thus, I conclude that when the purposes are aligned, the paradigm of "work-life balance" is false, and I explain:

This paradigm places work and life as two separate things, but technically everything is LIFE and work IS PART of it. After all, does anyone work dead?

Let me give you an example: when I'm at home, mowing the lawn in my backyard, I'm working, but in the work-life balance paradigm, this is classified as “life”.

Worse than that: My wife, who works a lot more than me and many more hours, for the simple fact that her remuneration is limited to an “I love you”, in this paradigm, is considered as a “no work”.

Work-life balance is false.

My speech is not about spending exhausting hours at the company and becoming a workaholic, my speech is about purpose alignment. Life also invades the work environment, as when my daughters have a difficult test at school or my wife is having problems, even at work, I can't stop thinking about them and keep an eye on Whatsapp.

Just as work invades the private environment - when I go on vacation and after four days I already miss the interaction with my assistant and also my CFO, who are in the same room as me. In the work-life balance, where should I put it?

A very relevant thing to say: when your work has nothing to do with your life purpose, not even on that “life-work balance” is the solution. Reducing working hours will not ease your anguish if you don't like where you are: an hour for those who aren't happy is eternity. And the solution for this? Look for another job, in a place where your life purpose is aligned with the organization’s.

For all those reasons, Tempo de Casa is definitely the most important celebration for me as it demonstrates the symbiosis between company and employee, giving meaning to life.
