The JRC scientists propose merging multiple CLP systemic toxicity hazard classes, without losing any protection.
Last November, the Joint Research Centre also prepared an informal document for the UN sub-committee of experts on GHS on how to increase efficiency with the use of non-animal methods.
?For the scientist, the intermediate effects can lead to a range of adverse health outcomes, such as reproductive toxicity and carcinogenicity, and are suited to alternative test methods.
Those changes can be explored during the development of the new classification system, integrating the new hazard classes and the new evidence based on non-animal methods, trying to avoid the overlap between chemicals classified for different systemic endpoints.
This course of action is strongly supported by the Animal rights NGO Humane Society International (HSI).
JRC scientists are also leading a working group?reporting to the UN sub-committee, which is discussing options for expanding mutagenicity classification, as discussed in a previous article.
