As a child, I was rarely seen without a book in my hand—even at mealtimes much to the annoyance of my mother! Books were my constant companions, my escape, my adventure. To this day, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll remains my all-time favorite. There’s something magical about the way it plays with logic, language, and imagination, inviting readers into a world where anything is possible.
But beyond the joy of a good story, reading has taught me some of life’s most valuable lessons.
1. The Art of Patience In an era of instant gratification, books remind us that good things take time. Each turn of the page builds anticipation, urging us forward while teaching us to savor the journey. Much like life, we don’t always get immediate answers—we piece things together, drawing from what we know and waiting for what’s to come.

2. A Gateway to Knowledge Every book offers a new perspective, whether it’s a work of fiction that deepens empathy or a nonfiction read that expands understanding. Books have a way of broadening our minds, connecting us to different cultures, ideas, and ways of thinking. I have a perchant for reading historical fiction especially WW2 and this has given me tidbitd of knowledge I would not know otherwise.
3. Mastering Language and Expression Words are powerful, and reading refines the way we use them. From expanding vocabulary to improving articulation, books teach us to communicate effectively and with confidence. The ability to express oneself clearly is a skill that carries through every aspect of life, from personal interactions to professional growth. I must however say that sadly some children's book today don't have this dedication to language and are found lacking.
Reading has shaped who I am, and I can’t imagine a life without books. In a fast-paced world, they offer a moment of stillness, a place to reflect, and a reminder of the beauty of words.
