Joy Notes . . . Taste of water!

Joy Notes . . . Taste of water!

Have you tasted water? A strange question, right? Most of us have a glass of water or gulp water from a bottle, not thinking much of it. It is taken for granted, so much like the air we breathe!?I remember a time when couple of us trekked through the countryside on a hot day and arrived at a village thirsty and hungry . The village Headman who spotted us the city folk, welcomed us and took us to his humble home. He put down two charpoys (light coir beds) leaning against the wall of his house for us to sit on and then offered us well-water from a mud-pot. As the few drops of that cool water touched?my?tongue, I rediscovered the taste of water!

?

At school, after a game of football, we kids would make a beeline to a water tap ?at the end of the field and have our fill of water. I don’t know about the other kids but I relished the taste of?water and looked forward to it after the game. In the later years we had to boil tap water ?and carry it to school because?of the threat of water-borne diseases. Much later in life we graduated to bottled water and?somewhere along the way I lost the taste of water.

?

As I travel overseas, in many countries I find it is safe to drink water out of the tap and I relish the experience and enjoy the taste of water that is not boiled, cooled or processed. Thinking about those experiences I suddenly?realized that ?often we don’t taste or experience something because we are wrapped up in our ‘Hurries’ & ‘Worries’! ?In life?everything we consume has a taste and the tongue dutifully calls it out but if we are hurrying, worrying & multitasking, we mute our tongue’s messages.

?

We eat & drink as a necessity, oblivious to the taste and the joy of it. Next time you have a glass of water, click the pause button on everything that is going on around you and the thoughts running through your mind and then with a sense of gratitude for the humble water, drink it. I am sure you will not only?taste the water but experience a little Joy in the experience.

Like the thought of taking time to appreciate the joys we currently have access to vs always being in pursuit of the next thing.

A great reminder Raj how we forget to soak in the simple joys of tasting what keeps our bodies or minds nourished. For many years my flask of warm water and me are inseparable and I keep sipping it through the day or meetings and feel it doing its bit to refresh.

A strange question indeed. Yes, I have tasted water, mostly when I'm really thirsty after playing or coming home on a hot summer day. The simple joys of life we overlook by our busyness! Good reminder, Raj!
