Imagine you have a vast corporate empire. It stretches across several countries. In your vast empire, there is a person who is very dear to you as he/she is an integral part of your empire. But you often hear him spread negativity about your company and view your ways of doing business as unethical. He is singing praises about your most formidable competitor in front of everyone in the market. What will you do? Hiranyakashipu had four sons. Prahalad, Anuhad, Had & Sanghad. He, along with his brother, ruled lands around present-day Persia. He was called Hiranyaksahipu because he was the first king to mine out huge quantities of gold from the then-called "Great Desert" or "Salt Desert". Like any other king would do, he put the huge quantities of gold to good use. But the quantity of gold was so massive that it caused 14 successive wars in a quest to acquire it. In puranic tales, these wars were referred to as "Deva-Asura Sangram". Hiranyakasipu, along with his brother, used the gold for the expansion of his empire. He expanded his empire to the north-west of Iran, to Afghanistan. The rest of the area around Babylon was under his brother's rule. There was no one to challenge their might. During Hiranyaksha's rule, the landmasses were packed together, unlike what we see today. It was a revolt of a tribe in Ketumala Island (present-day Norway) that resulted in his brother's death. After his death, Nrig came to the throne. The death of such a formidable partner and kin shook Hrinayakashipu to the core. Prahalad was the eldest of the princes. He never liked the way his father ruled his kingdom. It was a kingdom based on fear and cruelty. The power of bad made him more responsive to the bad things that happened in his life. It affected his relationship with his father.

Every individual shows a different reaction to bad circumstances; this ratio is a measure of the impact of the bad events that happen to us. This ratio, called the "positivity ratio," was put forth by Roy Baumeister. It generally takes 2–5 good events to trigger a bad one. This means a setback has two to five times more emotional impact than a positive event. The death of a brother might have impacted Hiranyakashipu badly. Emotions had made him less rational and more vulnerable to the power of bad. Hiranyakashipu never tried to march against Nrig because he never took the necessary risks. Even when Nrig joined hands with one of the Varaha(Boar)-tribes and increased his strength in the region, he refused to act. Instead, he turned cruel to his family, who tried to point out his flaws. He became cruel to his subjects.

Prahalad thus decided to spread negativity about his father's rule. He knew that if he silently handled this, his father would never change his ways and would be killed instead. His loyalty to his father and his kingdom will go unnoticed. But the moment he began to issue threats, his father might try to change and make up for their bad behaviour in a more significant way! He started to praise Vishnu, who orchestrated the cycle of events. For him, avoiding the death of his father was more important than doing good to him. He wanted his father to take the right step.

This is how the negativity bias governs a lot of relationships, and each relationship can be better if everyone embraces the "good enough" concept. "Good enough" involves the following steps:

Step 1: Remember that "bad" is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone's definition of "bad" is different. Talk less and listen more.

Step 2: Put bad moments to good use by learning from every bad situation instead of giving up when it happens.

Step 3: Avoid drawing conclusions about someone else's behaviour without first asking them for an explanation or giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Step 4: In the case of a fight or an argument, bring in an imaginary referee. This encourages both partners to listen and compromise.

Step 5: Get a second opinion from a real third party if you find it challenging to shift perspective unaided.

Step 6: Suspend judgments by overlooking your partner's shortcomings. Try to understand the advantages of every behavior your partner elicits.

Step 7: If you must respond, do not escalate the issue. Handle every situation calmly.

Step 8: Follow the negative golden rule—avoiding bad is more important than doing good to others.

It is important to note here that everyone's interpretation of an event is different. Your bad can be someone else's good.

Hrinyakashipu failed to understand this. He felt that Prince Prahlad was revolting against him. He began to view the Prince as an usurper and turned against him. While this was happening in Hiranyakashipu's kingdom, King Nrig had become more powerful. He took the title of "Narasimha". The King's "Narasimha" lineage still lives in Iran by the name of Negreto. At that time, they were spread across northern Turkistan to the Gulf of Iran. Iranian historians proclaim that the king was called "Naramasin." His statue was found to be half-man and half-lion. Finally, "Naramasin" managed to kill Hiranyakashipu in the Sumana mountains.

According to psychologist Teresa Amabile, a good way to make an impression is to give a "brilliant but cruel" review rather than a "plodding but kind" one. People with negative opinions are often seen as more brilliant than those who only have good things to say. Had Hiranyakashipu realized it, he would have changed himself, saving his life and his kingdom.

It is an important lesson for companies in the corporate world not to punish negative employees. Who knows, maybe he is just trying to save you from the worst that might come.
