Do you find joy in being micro-managed?
I bet you don't.
Most leaders would resoundingly say "no" to that question.
Yet, when it comes to managing their team, many leaders tend to take control of everything, want to know everything, and be informed of everything.
As the great Steve Jobs said,
"We hire smart people to tell us what to do, not the other way around."
While I agree with Jobs, I also understand that it takes time for someone to understand an organization's culture.
Therefore, managers must provide some guidance and hand-holding to ensure their team's success.
Think of it this way:
A mother bird nurtures her young until they grow wings and learn to fly on their own.
Yet, it is not the same as Micromanagement.
Micromanagement destroys talent and can damage your image as a manager.
Instead, give your team members the freedom to soar, while also helping them learn and grow.
Is it just up to the managers?
As team members, it's our responsibility to generate enough faith and confidence in our manager that they feel comfortable entrusting us with greater responsibilities.
By managing our responsibilities well, we can avoid being micromanaged and prove ourselves as valuable contributors to the team.
Let's remember that responsibility lies at both ends.
By trusting each other and embracing a collaborative approach, we can achieve great things together.
Trust takes time. While you may have credibility due to your past work experience, skill and knowledge, ask yourself:

1] Does my manager find me reliable?
2] Is my attitude and behaviour consistent with time?
3] Does my communication sound self-centred?
4] Do I have a deeper sense of connection with others?
5] Do I imbibe organisational?values?
There are many more questions that one can ask to understand if there is a sense of trust in the Manager-Team Member relationship.
Remember, you will be micro-managed and you will micro-manage in a system where trust deficit exists.
So, what can you do today to start building trust and stop being micro-managed?
