The Joy is in The Journey

When I finished my first Marathon in NYC and basically collapsed at the finish line, I felt like Rocky Balboa in Rocky I when Apollo whispers in his ear that there won’t be a rematch.
“Don’t want one,” a bloodied Rocky replies.
Yeah, that was me. I had gone from being 50 pounds overweight, cancer survivor, to running my first 5k and first marathon in five months. Weight gone, medal on my neck, bucket list checked.
Move on.
But within 24 hours, a sudden crush of melancholy washed over me, one that’s familiar to anyone who’s ever completed an endurance event.
What I thought I wanted was to cross that finish line and collect the medal, but it turned out what I craved was a deeper understanding of my full potential.
Such is the journey of the perpetual entrepreneur.
You quickly discover that it’s not the successful exit you really sought, or the celebrity, or the adulation; what you treasured was going all in on your conviction and being proven right.
As I always say, the joy of living is in the striving.
PS: I ran two more marathons. And Rocky made 10 sequels (something like that).
