The Joy and Freedom of Drumming

The Joy and Freedom of Drumming

Does it feel like you've lost your joy? I know I did many years ago and I didn't know how to get it back. Until I discovered the joy and freedom of drumming.

Why drumming makes you smile

There's something about drumming, especially when you drum with someone or in a group. Every time I drum with people, do you know what I see? Smiles! Once they realize that hand drumming is easy and fun, they perk right up!

Stress melts away and is replaced by joy! Here's what one participant had to say:

How does it work?

Drumming is a great release. Once you get in the zone, those feel-good endorphins kick in. You're connecting with your drum, with the beat, with each other, and yes, as a fellow Christian told me: It's like you're connecting with “the heartbeat of God.”

It's a similar feeling that I used to get when I was a runner. Both involve rhythm and cadence, breath, and repetition. You can't think of anything else when you're drumming. This is one reason why many of my clients, both young and old, report reduced levels of anxiety and stress.

There are many studies that back this up, including this 10-week study that measured the effects of group drumming on anxiety and stress levels, inflammation, and more. Also, despite the plethora of “dumb drummer jokes,” studies have shown that drummers' brains are different – and more efficient.

Free to drum

Anyone can play easy beats and rhythms on a hand drum, such as a djembe. Learning how to play the drum set (aka “drum kit”) is another story. However, tapping out some beats that just popped into your head or to a song, is relatively easy to do.

Here's a video I just made that offers some encouragement for beginning drummers:

If you're thinking, “Oh, I'm too old for that.” or “I wanted to play drums as a kid but now it's too late.” Nonsense! I started playing in a church band on percussion (bongos, congas, etc.) when I was 47 – with no experience or lessons! I taught myself how to play the full drum set at age 59.

So, why not start out on a djembe and give it a try? You'll be amazed at how good it makes you feel. And it's loads of fun! Need some help finding your joy? Click here and let's schedule a time to chat!
