The number one thing that crops up each time writers are asked to talk about their major challenges is “client acquisition” and “how to land clients”.?

I used to think this was an issue until I realised that the problem lies with me. I wasn’t getting something right. Clients are not scarce; they are everywhere!

Do you know that there are over 1.6 billion websites on the internet today? Even though all of them are not active, most of them are actively producing content, and many of them work with nothing less than 10 writers!

Your clients are out there looking for who will write their blogs, submit guest posts on their websites, pitch them new ideas, write their ebooks, write their novels, write their autobiographies… the list goes on. And there are billions of readers consuming those content online.

Heck, even businesses all over the world are looking for you!

Have you seen any thriving business today that hasn’t gone online? Well, I haven’t. Online is where the major deals are taking place. These businesses need content creators like you to make the deal happen. Do you know why? Because they know content is king. So, I still wonder why copywriters will say, “we can’t find clients”.?

If you are among those saying “I can’t find clients”, I see three major reasons:

To solve this is not difficult. You have to upgrade and improve your writing skills. Find out the actual problem you have.?

Does it have to do with poor grammar construction, not knowing what is required of you as a writer, or not knowing how best to put your ideas into words? Getting clients may not be your problem; the problem may be that you haven’t nurtured your writing skill. Potential clients have to look up your work samples before they hire you. Right??

Start with reading books, stories, and content written by experts (or people you look up to) in your writing niche.

Also, the writing field and niche you specialise in matters. Are you in the wrong place? Are you trying to squeeze yourself into copywriting when you should be doing blog article writing? Think about it.

  • ?????? ?????? ?????? ?????????????? ????????????????

Selling yourself is not just about telling your mother or friends (who may never want your services, anyways) that you are now a writer. It goes beyond that. You must be strategic. Go on social media. Go online! As I said, that is where the major deal is.?

Use Google to find people that may be looking for your writing services. Your Twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp, LinkedIn, what are they for? Those are places you will find your potential clients.?

If you want to get serious with the writing business, forget about posting glamorous pictures for now and get into the business of sharing your works and links to your portfolio. And please, if you don’t have a portfolio yet, make it a priority to get one (we will talk about how to make that happen in another newsletter).

I know I mentioned Whatsapp above, but someone like me hardly uses Whatsapp for business because my clients are not there. My contact list is mostly made up of close family and friends who most likely don’t need my writing service. The only reason I may use Whatsapp is for referral purposes. Otherwise, the best platforms for me have been LinkedIn and Twitter.?

Of course, if you want to start with landing outsourced jobs and jobs with smaller blogs and websites (this is a good option for newbies), you may want to check freelancing platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer. But, if you want to work with the bigger websites, start searching on LinkedIn and Twitter. You can also use job boards like Indeed, FlexJobs and Craiglist for this purpose.

When you have figured all of these out and made the necessary changes, you have to make plans to do it right. Make plans on how to earn clients' trust and what to do to convince them you are a great fit (we will talk about this in our next post).?
