The Joy of Being Called to Serve Others
I'm a University of Dayton alumna.
A very proud University of Dayton alumna. (All those years ago).
We heard over and over and over - learn, lead and serve.
The concepts of servant leadership began long before my college years - but they sure took root at UD. Giving to others - through acts of service, volunteering, leading, doing, and in general just being attentive to others and their needs - is a way of life.
So it's no surprise that over the years I've gravitated to leaders, company cultures, clients, and friends who radiate a selflessness that is hard to describe, but easy to witness.
Servant leadership embodies so very much. And today's short post is not at all meant to be a comprehensive commentary on the subject.
I'm leaving in just a few minutes to host an alumni business networking event tonight. And I'm so excited! A bunch of passionate Dayton Flyers all in the same room for a few hours, yes please.
I've lived in my current city for 11 years. But I traveled a lot before the pandemic. And then got really busy in those years where the kids are really busy, so you are even busier, by extension, driving them everywhere all of the time. And now, I'm slowing entering a new chapter in life, where my business model has shifted, and I purposely and intentionally travel less, there are less evening commitments with the family, and there's space and time to do more things like hosting tonight's event.
When one is called to serve others, there is an indescribable joy. You feel it. Others feel it. It is part of you.

What do you need from me today?
I'm sure I'm on a tangent here, but if you have a strong desire to serve others, but don't know where to start, just message me and we'll connect and talk it through.
If you want to have the feelings of joy described here, but you didn't even know something like that could be possible, just reflect for a minute on one thing you could do at work, at home, or in your community that is focused on others and their needs.
Keep asking those around you, "what do you need from me today?" and you'll experience the joy it is to be called to serve others.
