The Joy of Autumn Harvest

Lafayette awakens in a blaze of fall colors, a sure sign that harvest season has arrived. For me, a long-time resident of the bustling international metropolis of Beijing, the concept of 'harvest' had been nothing more than an abstract idea. Farmland and orchards were rare sights in my urban life. However, my journey to Purdue University brought about a remarkable change in my surroundings and perspective.
The transition was striking. While some might perceive the small-town setting surrounded by the countryside as isolating, for me, it was a transformation. It felt as though I had taken flight from the forest of towering concrete skyscrapers in Beijing and landed in Lafayette—a place where I encountered a world of wonders that had previously been beyond my reach.
One such enchanting experience unfolded last weekend when I eagerly participated in the autumn feast organized by ANTH. It was a journey that led me to Wea Creek Orchard, a picturesque family farm located just a short 15-minute drive from Purdue University. Here, I was immersed in a variety of activities the orchard had to offer, including apple picking, a charming tractor parade, and a delectable lunch. The orchard's small market was a treasure trove of products, such as butter, cider, honey, and more, all locally sourced.

My encounter with the vast American farmlands was akin to a person seeing the towering skyscrapers of New York City for the first time, captivated by its urban allure. I found myself eagerly inhaling the scent of hay in the air, and the sight of the crimson apples hanging from the trees took me by surprise. As I plucked my favorite apples with my own hands, the true essence of "harvest" finally dawned upon me. It filled me with a primal joy, one that transcended the limitations of dance and language.
When it comes to preferences for cities or rural areas, just as individuals have their favored foods, like radishes or cabbage, I found myself irresistibly drawn to the simplicity and natural beauty of rural Lafayette. In the face of it, all the artificially crafted beauty of the city world paled in comparison.
Thanks to the ANTH-organized event, I had the opportunity to embark on a life-changing experience. I believe that while a person cannot change the length of their life, they can certainly broaden its width.
