In 1997 during the relentless heat of Karachi's summers, the yellow mini vans traversed the cityscape like gallant warriors, their bold colors a beacon of resilience against the gritty urban landscape. These mini vans, more than mere modes of transportation, embody the daily battle against overcrowded services and the stark realities of unemployment, particularly poignant for individuals on their pathway to professional education, like myself.
Reflecting on my youth at 17, filled with optimism and ambition, I embarked on my daily pilgrimage to NED University. Amidst a sea of unfamiliar faces and without the guidance of mentors or close friends, securing a seat on the university shuttle, known as 'The Point' proved daunting. Boarding the G17, affectionately known as "Laddo," its vibrant yellow and white paint shining amidst Karachi's chaotic streets, I embarked on a journey that would shape my understanding of resilience.
The "Laddo" mini-van likely earned its name due to its bright yellow and white colors, resembling the traditional sweet "laddoo" commonly found in the Indian subcontinent. The association with "laddoo" could stem from its round shape and the mini-van's vibrant appearance, which may have led passengers or locals to affectionately nickname it after the popular treat. This nickname not only adds a touch of familiarity and cultural connection but also reflects the mini-van's role as a daily fixture in the lives of Karachi's residents, much like how "laddoos" are a beloved part of celebratory occasions and daily indulgences.
There are numerous varieties of laddoos, each with its own distinct flavors and ingredients. Some common types include besan (gram flour) laddoo, boondi laddoo, coconut laddoo, and so on. These laddoos are popular across the Indian subcontinent and are often enjoyed during festive occasions or as everyday treats.
The association between yellow laddoos and the yellow mini-van in Karachi can be metaphorical. Just as laddoos are cherished for their sweetness and comforting familiarity, the yellow mini-van becomes a familiar sight in the bustling streets of Karachi, offering transportation amidst the chaotic urban busy metropolitan environment. Both evoke a sense of warmth, familiarity, and cultural connection, bridging everyday experiences with a touch of sweetness and tradition.
It was during one of these journeys that I struck up a conversation with the mini-van driver—a weathered yet stoic figure whose years navigating Karachi's bustling roads were etched into his countenance. Intrigued by my choice to ride on laddo with higher fare instead of utilizing the university shuttle, he wanted to know why I did not try availing subsidized mode of using the Point, I was moved by his candid response. He gestured to the packed mini van around us, explaining the limitations of space and suggesting I seek assistance from the Student Union or Vice Chancellor—a gesture of solidarity that resonated deeply.
Eager to learn more, I probed further into his story. What unfolded was a narrative both humbling and enlightening: a man holding a Masters in Economics, yet compelled to drive a mini-van due to the harsh realities of Pakistan's job market. His decision to relocate to Karachi in search of opportunity mirrored the struggles faced by countless educated individuals across the nation—ambitious and qualified, yet constrained by economic intricacies beyond their control.
These exchanges aboard "Laddo" transcended mere dialogue; they painted vivid portraits of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Each day, as I commuted from NED University to Hyderi, North Nazimabad, I carried not just textbooks, but a profound respect for the unsung heroes of Karachi—the drivers, conductors, and fellow passengers whose narratives intertwined with mine, shaping my understanding of ambition, adversity, and the unyielding spirit that propels us forward.
In the throes of Karachi's hustling and clamorous streets, the yellow mini-vans ceased to be mere vehicles; they embodied a shared odyssey of hope and struggle, where every ride became a testament to resilience and the unwavering pursuit of a brighter future.
During one memorable mini-van ride, I found myself seated next to a teenage girl. Initially unremarkable, the journey took an unexpected turn when she addressed the conductor about the route and stops. but it took an unexpected turn when she engaged the conductor about the route and stops. His rapid-fire announcements—"Gul City, Moach Goth, Ruby Turn, Saeedabad, Pareshan Chowk, Faqir Colony, Badar Chowk No 4, Badar Chowk No 5, Bacha Khan Chowk, Abdullah College, Board Office, Khayaban-e-Shehenshah Suri Road, Hyderi, Sakhi Hasan, Nagan Chowrangi, Sohrab Goth, Shahrah Pakistan, Scout Colony, Abul Hassan Isphahani Road, Safari Park, University, Safoora Goth, Gul City"—echoed in the background.
Yet, amidst the clamor, his voice became mere background noise as my attention was suddenly drawn to a startling realization. The girl beside me was a eunuch. a mix of surprise and discomfort washed over me, and my body tensed with uncertainty. Tears welled in my eyes as fear gripped my thoughts. Why had she chosen the seat next to mine?
As she took her seat beside me, it felt as though a spotlight had suddenly turned towards us, casting a dense web of scrutiny that seemed to encompass not just her, but also me. The eyes of the men around us bore into her with an intensity that could almost be felt physically, their gazes like probing beams searching for something elusive.
