The Journey of a Young graduate
By Winnie Kiarie
High school Shaped my Career
Winning mentality complex overshadowed my studies in high school. I struggled with passing my exams from form 1. This resulted to going from the winner mentality complex to failure mentality. I had to seek hope and that was only in God and regular calls to my parents.
Failure mentality often leads to suicidal thoughts. These, thoughts convince you of how a disappointment to your family you are.
I realized how important a teacher and prayer is important in one’s High school life when this happened to me. My teacher of mathematics was transferred to another school leaving us with a new teacher. This is where new hope and my career began.
With this teacher, I felt new inspiration. A subject that I would score an E of 18 %, I was now scoring an A plain of over 80%.
This is how my career in Computer Science began.
My journey as a young Graduate
As in many Universities, I needed an attachment to graduate. I ended up paying an organization to offer me an attachment . Although I learnt so much in this organization, I felt that I also offered enough of my skills to also be paid. That is why I feel like young graduates should be careful when seeking opportunities so that they are not misused.
I also learnt the importance of having proper connections while still in school. I decided to make social media my friend. Tried to connect with other individuals within the industry that I am in and others that are related to mine.
My job search journey has not been easy. I have been disappointed so many times. Social Media helped me get a contract at an international organization. When the contract ended, this is where my journey at Skills to Grow Africa began.

The company is really your career partner. I have worked in a company offering similar services but nothing to show for it. At skills to Grow, I’ve seen people grow and dreams realized including mine.
Persistence, Faith and Networking
That is why I am excited to be part of this journey. At 21, I still have something you can learn, persistence, faith, and connecting with other people are important aspects of growing a career. Having a mentor is also an important aspect of your growth. Additionally work for an organization that you believe in.
