A Thunderstorm on a Sunny Day!
I’ve always believed that life has a funny way of teaching us lessons, often through experiences we never saw coming. My journey is a testament to this belief. Fourteen years ago, I was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes. At that time, it felt like a sudden and unexpected thunderstorm on a sunny day. Little did I know that this diagnosis would become one of the most significant learning curves of my life.
A Wake-up Call
Three months ago, my HbA1c was a staggering 12.9. For tThec test measures the average blood sugar levels over the past three months. A r for those unfamiliaresult of 12.9 is not just high; it’s catastrophic. It was a wake-up call, like a blaring alarm clock on a Monday morning, but this time, I couldn't hit the snooze button.
Looking back, it’s no surprise my numbers were so high. I had always been a foodie, savoring every culinary delight that came my way. Whether it was a street-style Dabeli or a late-night pizza binge, I indulged without much thought to my diabetes. My approach to managing my blood sugar levels was haphazard at best. A few years ago, I’d enthusiastically started a keto diet, convinced it was the magic solution, only to abandon it the next week in favor of my old eating habits. My meals were inconsistent, my exercise routine was almost non-existent, and I rarely monitored my blood sugar levels. In short, I was far too casual about a condition that required serious attention.
Facing the Challenge – Head on!
I remember sitting in my doctor’s office, feeling a mix of fear and determination. By this time, I’d also opted for “FitterFly’s Diabetes-Prime Program.” The doctor’s words echoed in my mind: “You need to make changes, or the consequences could be severe.” The gravity of the situation hit me hard, but so did a sense of resolve. I wasn’t going to let diabetes control my life.
The Battle Begins..
I embarked on a new diet and exercise regime, and it was far from easy. The first week felt like running a marathon with no finish line in sight. My cravings for sugary snacks were relentless like a child persistently asking for candy. I replaced cookies with roasted chanas and soda with water. My kitchen turned into a battlefield, where I fought my temptations daily. In this battle, Fitterfly 's Continuous Gluco Meter (CGM) and diabetes coaches were my trusted allies.
Monitoring with a Continuous Glucose Meter
One of the most significant changes in my journey was the introduction of a continuous glucose meter (CGM). This little device became my constant companion, giving me real-time updates on my blood sugar levels. At first, I was skeptical about how much it could help. But as I started using it, I realized its true value. The CGM provided a clear picture of how my body responded to different foods and activities. It was like having a personal coach, guiding me to make better choices. Data from CGM, combined with insights from my FitterFly coaches helped me understand patterns and adjust my diet and medication accordingly. No more guessing games or haphazard monitoring—this device made me more disciplined and proactive in managing my diabetes.

Building an Exercise Routine
When it came to exercise, I started small. Initially, my routine consisted of short, leisurely walks around the neighborhood. These walks were more about getting some fresh air than serious exercise, but they were a start. Gradually, I began to increase the distance and pace. Walking turned into brisk walking, and soon enough, I was able to go for longer periods without feeling exhausted. Encouraged by my progress, I introduced strength exercises into my routine. Simple bodyweight exercises like squats and push-ups became part of my daily regimen. Over time, I noticed improvements not just in my physical health but also in my energy levels and mood. Exercise became a cornerstone of my strategy to manage diabetes, complementing my dietary changes and regular monitoring with CGM.
Celebrating Success
Three months later, my HbA1c dropped to 8.1. It was a significant improvement, and while I knew I still had a long way to go, this progress fueled my determination. It was like climbing a mountain and reaching a plateau, giving me a moment to catch my breath and appreciate how far I’d come!
Lessons from Professional Life
This journey wasn’t just about managing my diabetes; it mirrored the challenges we all face in our professional lives. As a marketer with eighteen years of experience, I’ve encountered my fair share of obstacles. Just like my battle with diabetes, these challenges required perseverance, adaptability, and a positive attitude.
Turning Setback into Opportunities
In the digital marketing world, trends change rapidly. What worked yesterday might not work today. I’ve had campaigns that failed despite meticulous planning, akin to the frustration of a strict diet yielding no immediate results. However, each setback taught me valuable lessons. It’s through these experiences that I learned the importance of resilience.
I recall a particularly challenging project where our team was tasked with launching a new product in a saturated market. The initial response was underwhelming, and the pressure was immense. Instead of getting disheartened, we regrouped, analyzed our strategy, and made necessary adjustments. We introduced fresh, creative ideas and leveraged emerging trends. Slowly but surely, we turned things around, much like how my consistent efforts brought my HbA1c levels down.
Embrace the Journey
This experience taught me that professional and personal journeys are intertwined. The skills and attitudes we develop in one area can profoundly impact the other. My journey to better health has made me more disciplined and resilient, traits that have enhanced my professional life.
To anyone facing their own set of challenges, whether health-related or professional, remember that progress is often slow and arduous, but every small step counts. Celebrate your victories, no matter how minor they seem. Embrace humor and positivity, for they are powerful allies. And most importantly, believe in your ability to overcome obstacles.
Life is full of surprises, some pleasant and some not so much. It’s how we respond to these surprises that define our journey. My diabetes diagnosis was a storm cloud on a sunny day, but it also brought with it a rainbow of lessons and achievements. So, here’s to facing life’s challenges head-on, with determination and the unwavering belief that we can, and will, overcome.
