The (journey to the) true self. And why it matters

The (journey to the) true self. And why it matters

I recently received feedback under one of my posts, which stated that “the concept of the true self” wasn’t 100% clear to that person. That’s fantastic, because this might be the case for other people as well!

That’s why I decided to create this article for you today. To share with you what – to me – the true self is, what it is not and why the journey to our purest, most honest core is worth it.

What the true self IS

The true self is our authentic self. The real human being we are. Not a fake role we play to please or impress.

Not the masks we wear or the old baggage we carry, which keeps us small. The latter aspects are like invisible walls between who we are now and our potential. Aka the highest expression of ourselves and our gifts.

Our true self is a vital and radiant version of us, guided by a “healthy balance” between our mind and heart. People who show up like this in their career and everyday life are glowing from within. Often there's a sparkle in their eyes. Their energy is fantastic! You just want to have a bath in it. Hehe

They speak the truth with ease and grace. They know when to work and when it’s time to rest. In short: They embody self-love, -acceptance and -respect. And interact with others based on kindness, warmheartedness, compassion, patience, trust, harmony, hope, forgiveness, peace and goodness.

What the true self is NOT

The true self does not mean “That’s just who I am! Take it or leave it!” I don’t know about you, but this choice of words already tells me that something is misaligned…

Being your true self does not encourage you to act like an entitled brat. It also doesn’t give you the permission to behave as if you’re the center of the universe. Our true self acts out of an energy of connecting, creating win-win situations and finding a “healthy balance” between time/space for ourselves and others.

The journey to the true self also isn’t a “never-ending journey”. Yes, there are always new aspects you’ll discover about yourself.

At a certain stage though, you simply know you’ve “arrived at your true core”. That’s when you stop searching, stop comparing yourself to others and stop trying to prove things.

Being your true self also does not mean that you “always act like a monk/nun”. As you’re human, you’ll likely experience temporary moments when you behave like an idiot. And that’s ok. ?? Furthermore, sometimes wearing a mask might be a good idea to protect ourselves: E.g., when the person we deal with is so hurt / (emotionally) disconnected, that they use blaming, shaming or manipulative approaches.

Why the journey to the true self is worth it

Imagine how much more energy you’d have, if you stopped pretending to be somebody you’re not. Imagine how much more time you’d have for yourself and people/things that really matter if you learned to make the “right” decisions, based on your inner wisdom. Imagine how much easier you’d attract the “right” people into your bizz, when you showed to the world who you really are.

And these are just some examples. My clients regularly mirror back to me that they experience less stress, anxiety, bitterness, anger and exhaustion. And that they feel so much more joyful, healthy, creative, inspired, connected, energetic, wealthy, playful, peaceful, aligned, focused and magnetic.

The key to experience all of that is to let go of aspects of yourself - thoughts, behaviors, routines, and habits - that don’t serve you anymore.

Things that make your life and business complicated and heavy.

How do I start?

This work starts with being open to the idea that we aren’t perfect, that we don’t – and never will – know everything. And that there’s always something new to learn, explore and discover. We’re allowed to be humble, trust (again) and dare to question everything.

Yes, this might feel uncomfortable at times. Our “little self” might throw a tantrum and hate it. And breathing/moving through discomfort is necessary if we want to grow and evolve into the next best version of ourselves.

So, learn to listen to, receive, process and accept information about yourself that parts of you won’t like. Things that will question your identity, thoughts, values, behavior and actions.

?Homeplay questions

Before we come to an end, I wanted to gift you with a hand full of journaling questions, which will surely bring up a few new insights about yourself and outdated thinking patterns. Happy contemplation!

  • Where do I hide behind a mask (e.g. when I coach)? Pretending to be somebody I‘m not.
  • Why do I do so? What’s the limiting story behind it?
  • What is one thing I can do today to be a bit more authentic than I was yesterday?
  • What is my motivation behind becoming my true self?
  • Who can be my accountability partner on this journey?

Interesting. You say, "The true self is our authentic self". This sparks a couple of questions: What is the difference between the true self and authentic self is the true self is our authentic self? How are you sure at any point on the journey that you are actually your authentic self and so your true self?
