Neuroscience may not be the first field that comes to mind when discussing robotics and AI, yet it plays a crucial role in their development. Our quest to understand the brain and nervous system has driven significant breakthroughs in these emerging fields.
For example, in robotics, the concept of sensors—components that enable robots to perceive their environment—is directly analogous to human senses like vision and hearing. Just as we use eyes and ears to interact with the world, robots use cameras and microphones to gather data.
Similarly, in AI, the foundational concept of the perceptron is inspired by our understanding of how neurons communicate in the brain. This communication, involving action potentials and synapses, serves as the blueprint for neural networks in AI, where nodes (neurons) connect and transmit signals much like our brain's neurons do.
These connections between neuroscience and technology underscore how deeply our understanding of ourselves influences our ability to create intelligent machines. As we continue to explore the brain, new possibilities for AI and robotics will emerge, leading to even more sophisticated and capable systems.
