The Journey of Supply Chain People Partners at Picnic

Distinctively at Picnic, we don't operate physical stores, and all grocery orders are exclusively placed through our app. While our business heavily relies on this cutting-edge technology, it is the dedicated individuals behind it who truly distinguish us. As a Supply Chain People Partner, you serve as the primary point of contact for the motivated individuals shaping our supply chain operations, including warehouse management, as well as warehouse employees, affectionately referred to as "shoppers" at Picnic.

At Picnic, we are committed to supporting and valuing the growth and progression of our employees. To give you deeper insight into the role of a People Partner and the exciting opportunities that can unfold within our organisation, we spoke to some of our colleagues who have experienced this enriching position firsthand.

They shared their own experiences as People Partners at Picnic, highlighting the rewarding nature of the role and the internal opportunities that arose from undertaking it. We firmly believe in fostering internal talent development, and we take pride in providing a platform where our employees can flourish and advance within our organisation.

So, what is it like to be a People Partner at Picnic? Why don’t we let some of our colleagues tell you.

Chris Wentink (People Partner)

“I parked my car on my first day and made my way towards the building. It was huge! The bustling activity and countless individuals caught my attention, leaving me momentarily stunned as I surveyed the scene. I took a minute to let it all sink in. How does one effectively manage and organise such a vast operation, with so many people involved? Through my time as a People Partner I have learned how, but more on that later…

My name is Chris Wentink, and for the past 1.5 years, I've been working as a People Partner in Picnic's Supply Chain division. It has been a fabulous ride, allowing me to connect with inspiring individuals and contribute to numerous meaningful projects. My primary areas of focus have been leadership development, absence management, and optimising the employee journey. Throughout my time as a People Partner, having the opportunity to witness employees flourish and excel in their roles has been particularly rewarding. Additionally, working closely together with a talented leadership team and collaborating on projects has proven vital in ensuring everyone stays well-informed and aligned towards shared goals.

Following an enjoyable onboarding experience that involved collecting and delivering groceries myself, I dove into the work with a burning desire to find the answer to the question that I had on my first day: How does one efficiently organise such a place? It didn't take long for me to discover the key: teamwork!?

After 1.5 years at Picnic, I still loved my job, but I realised that travelling from Amsterdam to Rotterdam started to become more of a burden for me personally. I felt comfortable discussing this matter with my manager, and shortly thereafter, an intriguing opportunity arose: People Partner in the Central team in Amsterdam! I was very happy that I was presented with this chance to switch roles internally, allowing me to continue my work as a People Partner with a different team and with a different scope. The flexibility of Picnic management to present me with the opportunity to take on a new challenge and develop within the organisation is one that I really appreciate and find very motivating! One of the great things about Picnic, along with the young and energetic culture, is its ability to offer dynamic and exciting career opportunities and responsibilities. I can’t wait to find out what the future holds for me at Picnic!”?

Sandra Halfers (Team Lead People Support)

“Over 2.5 years ago, I embarked on my journey at Picnic as a People Partner for the Berkel & Rodenrijs location. As the location was brand new, I had the opportunity to shape everything according to my own vision. Of course with the invaluable support of my colleagues. During this period I learned so much! I gained knowledge and experience in various areas, including leadership development, absence cases, payments, and more.?

After some time, my manager approached me with an exciting proposition: to temporarily assist in setting up another new location. I thought: sounds cool, another opportunity, let’s do it! Facilitated by my team at Picnic I had been given a chance to embark on another opportunity for personal and professional growth, and eagerly accepted the challenge.

Again, after 2 years in Berkel, where I worked with a great team and on some rewarding projects, my manager and I decided it was time for me to use my knowledge and experience to begin a fresh challenge within Picnic. While considering my options, it was clear to me that I wanted to remain a part of the Supply Chain People Team, given the incredible colleagues I have had the privilege to work with throughout my time at Picnic. A new position came available in the team which I believed really suited me as it really aligned with the projects I was already involved in! Therefore I am now the Team Lead of the People Support team. Here I have the opportunity to expand my skills in a leadership role and I am dedicated to enhancing and streamlining our HR processes. This transition exemplifies the ample room for personal development within Picnic, a testament to the Picnic's commitment to nurturing its employees.”
