A Journey of Reflection and Growth

A Journey of Reflection and Growth

As I entered the grand hall of the Dominican Convent School in Harare, a gentle wave of nostalgia washed over me, transporting me back to 1978.

At 12 years old, I was transitioning from Chishawasha Primary School. Although a seasoned boarder, my language skills then were unrefined, and coming from Mabvuku, I didn't fit the typical student profile. I travelled back in time, and it was a deeply emotional moment. I had returned to my alma mater - ?part of a deliberate effort to reconnect with my past as I approached my 60th birthday celebration.

This visit stirred the deep connections I hold with the school, highlighted by the presence of three generations in one room—Sr. Gundula, my former biology teacher and headmistress, a link to the past; myself, bridging the past and present; and the young women before me, including students from our Star Leadership Academy - high achievers destined for greatness whose potential we help to harness through our gap year leadership programme at Higherlife Foundation .

Back at the very place where my journey began, I was ready to share my story with girls who, like I once was, were full of dreams and questions about the future. As I looked at them, I was reminded of the intertwined roles that teaching, coaching, and mentorship have played in shaping my purpose. Teaching provided the knowledge I needed; mentoring offered guidance through shared experiences; and coaching empowered me to find solutions within myself, fostering independence and self-reliance. Each role uniquely contributed to my personal development, creating a robust support system that I continue to rely on, leading me to become the coach that I am today.

I shared with the girls the importance of a question that has been central to my journey, encouraging them to consider it as well: "Who am I?" -? a question fundamental to personal growth. I believe this question is best answered by reflecting on the biblical perspective of humans as spiritual beings and the necessity of nurturing the spirit, soul, and body. This holistic approach has served as my compass over the years, guiding me through life's challenges with clarity and purpose. It also connects to another question I often ask myself: "Why?" - why do I do what I do? This introspective self-reflection helps me continuously seek deeper understanding and purpose. It is vital for aligning my actions with long-term goals, transforming obstacles into opportunities, and guiding me to make informed and balanced decisions, staying true to my path.

Balancing life’s various aspects is something I constantly strive for, focusing on spiritual growth, financial planning, intellectual development, health, career, and family life. Each area requires careful attention and planning, as neglecting any one can lead to imbalance and dissatisfaction. Reflecting on my past, I remember the insecurities and societal pressures I faced. I learned that embracing my uniqueness and building self-confidence were essential in cultivating my own identity to overcome challenges and withstand external judgments. Navigating life’s journeys with purpose and determination, while contributing positively to the world around us, is deeply rewarding.

We ended the event with a communal prayer and the school anthem, a moment that filled me with hope and determination. As I left the hall, I was inspired by the eager faces of the students, ready to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery, just as I once did.
