Phthalo Blue Art Studio

This is Annamaria Todaro's story: I first heard about the Small Business Development Center from a very friendly clerk at the Erie County Clerk’s office in downtown Buffalo. I was there to open my first small business/sole proprietorship called Phthalo Blue Art Studio, a pop-up art studio experience where I cater lesson plans to educate adults in modern and contemporary art, art history and creation at really fun venues around town. I told the clerk a little about my vision and she gave me a booklet with information and resources to use to help me along in my new journey. She spoke highly of the SBDC at Buffalo State.

I called the number listed for the SBDC, and very quickly and easily got myself signed up for the Entrepreneurship 101 workshop. It was really inspiring, useful, and motivating. The work we did in this class gave me a better idea of the bigger picture and how to navigate running a business. I learned how many resources are out there for small businesses. Through the program I was fortunate enough to be able to work one on one with an amazing business advisor, Marilyn Roach. She helped me navigate the overwhelming obstacles about running your own business - keeping records of revenue and spending. This was a huge obstacle for me, especially because I struggle with math and numbers. Marilyn had this calm, collected way of giving me explicit examples of what I needed to do to keep my records and how to record what I am doing.

Through my dedication to being a part of this program, I was lucky enough to receive a grant for a full website! I worked with Alotl Media Productions over the course of several months, working to build a vision when it came to my website look, feel and content. My lovely designer Lauren and her partner Cassandra were able to teach me so much I never knew I would be capable of when it comes to managing my website. They are very talented, and excited to work with first-time business owners like me to be successful in what we are doing. The support from all parties involved in this process gave me the confidence and the know-how to evolve my pop-up art studio into an online pop-up art store - a place where all of my original artwork can be turned into prints, home goods and accessories through Printify, a fast-paced growing Print on Demand (POD) company.

I have had a really positive experience working with the Small Business Development Center at SUNY Buffalo State University, I have highly recommended it to quite a few people who are in the early stages of their business, and for some people who have been in business for years but need to refresh their ideas and approach to things. This programs uplifts and inspires, and the help is so needed and welcomed. I am so grateful to you all!
